Side charge VS. Traditional charging handle

While following the thermal & night vision thread I saw a post about a AR upper that has a side charging handle instead of the usual rear charging handle.

Guess I’m curious what’s the Pro’s/Con’s of the side charging handle on a AR?

I like a side charging handle for night hunting over a rear charging for ease of use with night optics. Only draw back I have found is they side charging handle tends to eat tethered optic covers like on a pts 233.

Side chargers are harder to release a jam due to pulling it straight back or mortar it if needed.

Also if something does break then it will be more expensive due to not having interchangeable parts as easy.
