    Nope. They it is just an aluminum plate with grooves and painted black (although the paint on one of my two is flaking off), and they absorb the cold, thus thawing the frozen meat/fish pretty rapidly. As I mentioned, I prime the plate(s) with hot water first to warm them and speed up the process.

    You can get them from some dollar stores or off Amazon.

              I think it works exactly the opposite of the fins on an air cooled engine. Those fins have enough surface area to radiate the heat away from the engine.

              The thawing plate probably (by conduction) draws the cold away and disperses it over much more of a surface area.

              But it has been 49 years since I took physics in high school….
