I had just settled in on Sunday morning. I usually bow hunt from a tree stand but it was pretty dang cold and I decided I’d bring the rifle and sit the morning hunt from the comfort of a box blind.
I get a text from my son Gus (14) at 6:21. He’s hunting from home because he had to leave the lease Saturday afternoon for work. He says “there’s a buck at my feeder already but I can’t see how big his his rack is yet.” I text back and ask if the buck is still there? 5 minutes later he texts me back “He walked away but but I just shot a bigger one! I’m shaking so bad!”
I immediately get another text from wife. “You need to come home right now. Gus shot a deer!” So I tell Gus to wait for me to track the deer and I head back to camp and make the hour drive back home.
Easiest tracking job on a bow shot I’ve ever done. He made a perfect quartering away heart/lung shot and the deer didn’t go far. I couldn’t be prouder. He’s been trying to get a buck with a gun for about 3 years now. He started bow hunting last year and got serious about it this year. We’ve spent many hunts together in a box blind and we’ve had several opportunities for bucks that were borderline legal (AR) and I had to tell him no. He was pretty upset with me a couple of times but he’s been very patient and it was worth the wait. He agrees. He did it all by himself.
It’s been a great season so far. I’m still on the hunt but 2 of my boys got their first bow bucks.
My wife put a little video together but I don’t how to post it. Here are a few pics. Thanks.

And here’s my oldest son’s buck from October. Mudman13
