My Sister's report from yesterday...
"I just got home from the hospital. Sally went with John to see an oncologist today (originally the appointment was for the 26th). John was very weak and in a great deal of pain. The doctor admitted him to the hospital. Sally's words - "he has no blood." For normal functioning your blood is supposed to have 14 something (hemoglobin I heard the doctor say later). John's level was at 3. He's been losing blood for a long time. The doctor said that to begin with your body can adjust but at about level 4 it begins shutting down. Several people have said to him today they don't know how he was able to even walk into the doctor's office on his own or how he's managed to still be alive. Tonight they are going to do a CAT scan, tomorrow an upper GI, and Wednesday a lower GI. They are going to start him on blood transfusions tonight also. They will try to determine where the bleeding is coming from and what it can be attributed to. Hopefully by Wednesday afternoon we'll hear the results of all the tests and then what the consequent actions might be. But he's really very sick. White as a sheet of paper."
