            My definition of “necessary” varies depending on how much other people’s thoughts threaten my families freedom and/or well being.

              That's an interesting point. While thoughts alone cause no damage, it's the actions they lead to that do. Therefore a good "nip in the bud" can be quite effective at curtailing an unwise action.
              I try to err on the side of kindness but sometimes a stiff rebuke is required.
