I had been down to the valley 3 times trying to kill a Nilgai and all 3 times I have come home broken hearted and with empty coolers
Twice was vía drawn Tpwd archery hunts at Laguna Atascosa and another time last January hunting private lands thru a family connection. All three trips were still fun, but I have had nothing but Nilgai revenge in my mind all year [emoji3]
My best bud and I decided to book a hunt via an outfitter and chose Insight Outdoors and Cody Phillips to get us on a great hunt
They didn’t disappoint
We hunted all spot and stalk and looked for the animals despite a 35mph wind
We passed up several bulls and cows on the drive into the ranch, so we were excited
On our walk, we found a handful of young and good bulls, but not an old bruiser like I wanted. I didn’t care about length of horns, I just wanted the body to be big. Lots of meat [emoji3052]
An hour into our stalk,we spotted some cows in dense brush and after doing a 30 yd belly crawl, we found our bull. He wouldn’t give me a shot for a while and we thought he was a lost cause, but then he changed direction and walked into a tiny open window between mesquites and I was able to put one in his heart at 40 yds
This was an amazing hunt and our guide Mando was really a true expert
We worked hard to get in position in animals that would have busted me 10 times over without his guidance
The wind was brutal all day, but ended up being a big help in getting this bull down
My buddy, Henry got his own bull later that trip and we would highly recommend Cody and his connections down there
We ended up having the good fortune to hunt with the same guide and on the same ranch that Steve Rinella filmed his recent Nilgai hunt at.
Price was right, hospitality, meat preparation and hunt were even better
The two shopping carts are the meat we dropped off at the processor
We had already taken the meat off the ribs
The tenderloin in the picture is my family dinner tonight and it weighs over 2 lbs [emoji3]
