If ever in doubt, get eye to eye with the snake and see if it has a cat eye pupil or round pupil. This should work with all pit vipers in Texas. Keep in mind the coral snake is not a pit viper and has a round pupil. Don’t mess with a snake if unsure.

Yeah that sumbuck is a hoss. I'm not so sure it wouldn't qualify as a record. It's hard to tell exactly how long it is from the picture. But it's sure enough a big one.

Biggest one I've seen was 48 5/8". I got it verified and from the research I've done it's the biggest one on record. But of course that's just going by States that keep official records of reptiles. There very well could be one that was. That one might could have knocked mine out of the running but I don't know.

The first hog nose snake I ever saw was somewhere over 6'. They can get a lot bigger than that one. 95% of the hog nose snakes I have seen are less than 3ft.

Definitely a hog nose, judging by the head and the way he was starting to flatten himself out, up near his head.

It was a Eastern? I've seen some Westerns that were 5' or better.

It cracks me up how none of our snake snobs can never agree on anything but a rat snake ID.
