    Amish Percheron Hitch

An Amish farmer near our farm was prepping (cultipacking) his fields Saturday with a 8 horse Percheron team. Five in back, three in front.

He was using a 10 horse hitch last week pulling a 4 bottom plow. He was resting the horses for about 5 to10 minutes after a couple of passes. He also had a water tank on a wagon to water the team every 30 minutes or so.

His 10 best Percherons that are trained to pull are worth $65,000. They weigh 2500 to 2700 pounds each. You can feel the ground shake if you are standing close by when they make a pass. He also has other horses that he works into the rotation for training.

Amish obviously don't like their faces or their inventions to be on the tv or internet.

I'm surprised it takes 8 to pull that little cultipacker.

It probably doesn't. He said he had been training 3 horses. The lighter less technical pull is probably a good training run.

The 4 bottom plow or field cultivator is a much more difficult pull....even with a tractor.

I bet it would take a 25hp tractor to pull it. He's doing it with 8hp.

Work the fields and fertilize at the same time.
