    Deadly protein pen incident

Anybody else having trouble with cattle getting over their hog panel protein pens? This was a deadly incident for five Akaushi (Wagyu) cattle. We just had the feeders filled, two days later the cattle got in and knocked over one of our 1250lb Krivoman feeders. They gorged themselves on the protein and never made it back out of the pen.

Any suggestions for cattle proof pens?

OUCH, that really sucks. Hate to see that happen to any animals but those were some high dollar cows!

        wow!

Cattle proof you have 2 options: 4 strand barb wire or true height cattle panels

I thought they made that up for Yellowstone. Didn't know a cow would really eat themselves to death.

a strand of barb wire about 3-5"'s above the hog panel will keep them out.

Were they your cows or the owner of the lease?

I always used barbed wire. Now with the hog problems and everyone using short panels I wondered how often this happened. I would 4 strand it- Too bad you didn’t have water station in there they probably would have made it.

They tore mine up several times this year. Finally bit the bullet and had 2” pipe pen built and that stopped the problem. Told wife we waste money on protein to feed cows or on pen so deer can get it.

man imagine how well those akaushi would have tasted after eating all that feed, right before they died.

Welded up lometa panels work wonders ( cattle can’t push the tops down like straight cattle panels )
