You're right, "Classic" and carbon barrel don't really go together. The rifle in my last post has a 24 in barrel. I think a 20 incher in that configuration would fit the bill.

There are lots of good options with much less recoil than a 308. My vote would be 7mm-08 or a 6.5CM. The creedmoor ammo is as easy to find as 30-06 these days.
