Get either a bowtech (very light), or a Mathews (heavier, but very stable) bow. These are two very good bows in your price range - of course used, but you won't regret.

I like my Carter Plain 1 thumb release. Works like a charm every time. The anchor point is a bit of an issue, but I set the string on my nose as an anchor point.
BTW, what brand/model thumb release...
