Moon Pic - First Attempt

Bright full moon out tonight, so I thought I would give it a shot. Thought it turned out OK considering my (lack of) skill level. Anyone have tips or tricks to getting a great shot? May try again tomorrow night.

Nice. The moon is a lot of fun to photograph. Good job!

Maui-diver 10-16-2016 09:33 AM

Cool pic

What settings did u use?

FriscoAg 10-16-2016 11:23 AM

Thanks guys. Using a Canon 70-200 1.4L USM with 1.4x extender, tripod & remote.

ISO 100
F11
Shutter 1/125

Manual focus was difficult. Maybe my eyes aren't as good as I thought they were

If you have live view, use it to focus. On many cameras, you can zoom the display 5x and 10x giving you more to work with for focusing.

While the full moon is fun to photograph, a not-so-full moon often makes for a better image. When it isn't full, there are more shadows on the moon with the more indirect, less flat, light. It creates a bit more texture on the surface.

70-200 1.4?

I didn't even know they made such a thing.

I don't even wanna know what that costs. [emoji15]

I wanted to do something different with the Super Moon. Casey and I talked about it yesterday and looked at various locations around town to try to come up with something. I originally wanted to do the Hallettsville Courthouse, which is also lit up with Christmas lights, but when I went to town at lunch I didn't think it would work.

At the last minute, I decided to drive 35 miles to a rig location in hopes of getting a good shot. I'm pleased with the way this turned out, for the most part.

Sony A7s II
Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II (w/Metabones Adapter)
Shot in APS-C mode for additional crop

On Casey's suggestion, I shot around f/16 to "star" the rig lights, so I had to bump the ISO to 12,500 and tried to stay around 1/100th second.

As the moon got higher, it also got brighter, which made it hard to get proper exposure on the rig and the moon. I'm not great with editing, but I made a few adjustments in LR until it looked decent on my monitor.

Was hoping to get some supermoon pics tonight, but it's too cloudy as of now. Anyone else have a good view tonight?

TXHunter12 12-03-2017 08:40 PM

It’s been raining all afternoon. Was hoping to see it also.

I tried my first shots at moon they came out ok but need more experience and probably better gear...sigma 70-300mm on Nikon d5200 but my lcd colors are jacked up from dropping camera so until I pull the card itís hard to see exactly what adjustments needed off camera view

Started to see it turning red around 10 or little later but it peaked around 11...I thought just before peak was best

Good shots, yea I found it to be much more difficult than I had imagined. Hard to focus on a subject with such little light. That, and it was almost directly above me, so I had the camera pointing straight up and I was trying to sit underneath the tripod to get the shot. lol

FriscoAg 01-22-2019 08:11 AM

This is prob the best one I got. I saw all these amazing photos on instagram and thought "that's what I'm going to get". OK, maybe next time!

Nice...yeah itís hard to compare shots with someone who knows what theyíre doing on top of having thousands of dollars more of lens/body on them
