20-21 Amistad

Whos ready?

bowhunt3 08-20-2020 06:08 PM

I'm ready, we never made it out there last year.

Gringolevi 08-20-2020 07:43 PM

Me too, I had some luck last year on whitetail and one good mouflon. I’m just hoping the camp grounds and everything is open come October

Pedernal 08-20-2020 07:45 PM

So far it’s been shut down on weekends and open during the week... hopefully some common sense enlightens who ever makes the decisions over there

Gringolevi 08-20-2020 08:05 PM

I dang sure hope so. I’m ready to head out in September and chase elk then come back and see that Amistad has to offer that is if they allow us to use our public land.

justletmein 08-20-2020 08:30 PM

I'm in, probably won't go down til December though. We have a lot going on this year between Wyoming and Colorado but I'm not missing my Amistad hunts and hoping to keep my streak alive of killing at least 1 critter there, been 7-8 years in a row now I'd have to count but need to keep it rolling.

RGV Hunter 08-24-2020 02:58 PM

I am ready. Gonna spend a week there. I was wanting to go chase elk in Colorado but budget restrictions kept me from going up that way. Amistad will do.

gregfrancescon 09-01-2020 01:15 PM

I'm ready. Amistad has really become one of my favorite places the last two seasons.

Romulan 09-02-2020 10:00 PM

I’m thinking of trying my hand at Amistad - for those of you that go regularly - is it crowded (hunters and/or non hunters)? How’s the situation with border control?

justletmein 09-02-2020 10:38 PM

Yes it's crowded with hunters no doubt. I've never seen a non-hunter out there though I've seen hunters that don't act like hunters. Lol... of course sometimes guys scouting or whatever. Border Patrol has a pretty good presence but they're usually not running around in the hunt areas unless there's a chase that leads in there I'd imagine, never seen them in there.

Gringolevi 09-07-2020 08:03 PM

Anyone ever dove hunt Amistad?

It can be pretty crowded, when the mouflon are on one of the hunt areas, or if someone sees a big buck and tells someone else. That hunt area will be very crowded.

I have been out there and had guys on mountain bikes, riding all over the place. You never know what you are going to run into out there. I found a couple digging up Spanish Daggers one year. Did not think anything of it, till a park ranger asked if I had seen anyone digging up plants. Turns out that is a big no no.

As of the last time I was out there crossbows were not legal. But I found two guys across the road from a hunt area, in a area that is not open to hunting but part of Amistad. I think it's a rest area or for picnics. But there were two guys over there with a cross bow chasing and shooting at something down the side of the hill. I did not go across the road to ask what they were doing. I was hoping they were shooting goats. During that time, some local turned about 70 goats loose out there to le them graze. Multiple of us, kept talking about shooting goats. I think the park rangers were looking for the guy who turned them loose out there also.

As for people coming across the border, into a hunt area, it's not common, they don't cross much in that area. I know when I used to camp in the camp grounds out there. There was almost always a Border Patrol agent, that would go and hide back down one of the roads and watch the camp grounds. So I did not worry, that and I had my 10 mm. I got pretty dang cold in those camp grounds a few nights. It was just me the jack rabbits, deer and the border patrol agent, the border patrol agent was the only one warm, he stayed in his car with the engine running.

You would be in the unpopular club, if you did so.

As much as I'd hate for it to happen, and I've had hunts completely ruined by duck hunters out there, it's every bit his right to go dove hunt whenever he wants. Nobody's hunt is more important than anyone else's.

Thats the fun of public land hunting. Im not in it to be popular but Im not planning on dove hunting it either. I noticed last year people had left hulls in hunt area 5. I just wanted to see if/ how many people dove hunted it.

Romulan 09-27-2020 09:58 PM

Hey guys - I've done the arduous and "academic" task of reading the old threads on Amistad - I read on a post that there was a website "Amistad Bowhunter" which I think has shut down. There was a post that mentioned "5 things you must know before hunting Amistad" where it mentioned a sinkhole. Do any of you know where this is located so I don't end up on the new haha! Seriously, any info on the sinkhole and the other "things" we must know would be most appreciated!! Thanks in advance

justletmein 09-27-2020 09:59 PM

I wanna say it was 2 or 3? Don't quote me on that. Never heard of anyone seeing it in person.

Sideler 09-30-2020 01:59 PM

There is a sinkhole on 3 not far from the front fence, Middle of the property.
There is a sinkhole along the west boundary fence on unit 1. I think it is before the fence doglegs to the west.

Gringolevi 10-01-2020 11:35 AM

Anyone be out next, Wednesday/Thursday?

Thanks - I've pasted some pics below - circled in blue (let me know if I didn't get the general area)

Just curious - how many of you guys hunt solo? I'm 99.9% of the time

I love to hunt solo, but usually have the wife with me or a buddy. When I'm solo it seems to always lead to some great hunts, probably because I'm focused on the hunt because there's nothing else to do. lol... With others I'm more in chill mode, drink beer and grill up grub by a campfire and end up sleeping in.

Pedernal 10-28-2020 01:09 AM

Prayers up for the hunter and family. Hopefully the boat got loose and he is walking out.

I read about this earlier today and that was my exact thought..

TexOddball 10-28-2020 09:27 AM

That’s rough country. One loose patch of gravel could have your day going south in a heartbeat out there. We hunted it back in January, on the hike in the last morning, I lost my balance and strained a tendon in my knee trying to keep from falling off the hill. Took it easy the rest of the day, limped out, and I still don’t have the full flexibility back in that knee all these months later. I’d still take that over the fall I saved myself from. Hope that guy’s ok.

justletmein 10-28-2020 12:21 PM

Any updates on our lost homie out there? I checked the news releases page for NPS Amistad and NPS overall and I can't even find the original news release.

Not yet. My wife served with him in the AF. They are spreading the word around. They have found some other clothing they believe is his. If so then he made it out of the water. Still searching though.

****... That sounds like a classic case of shedding wet clothes because he's freezing. :(

DaddyO 10-28-2020 04:09 PM

Prayers sent.

Yes it does. hopefully he had a way to make a quick fire. We used to carry a "fire starting kit" in our PFDs for this reason. Something to consider for the folks boating especially during the winter months.

Continued prayers that he is found safe and for his family.

justletmein 10-28-2020 05:56 PM

The local news in SA reported on it just now, they said hos vehicle was found at a camp site. Hmmm

Gringolevi 10-29-2020 12:01 PM

I just seen this, any updates? Prayers up.

texaswoods5 10-29-2020 05:18 PM

There was another thread on the fire about it. They found his body. R.I.P
