Just wanna give you guys a heads up, Amistad has been handing out this brochure attached all year long. I see it didn't jive with the Val Verde South zone so sent a screenshot to one of the GW's down there. He said NPS will be correcting it online and posting fliers at all the hunt areas. So it looks like buck season is in fact over on Jan 3rd and this brochure is NOT correct. We are to follow the Val Verde seasons posted for North Zone.

You mean the feds didn’t coordinate with the state? Imagine that!

So has anyone been over to unit 5 to see if there are any sheep? I really hope they aren’t all gone for good. I enjoyed hunting them
|
Really looking forward to going there’s this year. Got a party of 3 or 4 of us that are serious about Amistad!
|
I’m heading down tomorrow to hunt area 5. My son did great last yr. and this yr he’s been skunked twice. Hope to see something this weekend.
|
Good luck bud!

^^^^ nice was that in area 5 or 4. I know 4 has a few nice ones in there. My son went to area 4 this yr when 5 didn’t pan out and took some pics of some good ones.
|

No mouflon in 4, they're all in 5. |

We went to Amistad and had a good turnout. Now for the bad news. We spoke to a park ranger and he said that they are going to eradicate any and all non native species from the park (hog, muflon, auodad). They will start an operation by trapping and shooting them on sight. The operation will run continuously for a good while (maybe the entire year). Park rangers will be equipped with rifles and will shoot them on site. This information came from a park ranger. If they are going to do that then it I for one will not be traveling 7 hours to just hunt whitetails when I can do it at home. If you don't agree with what the park is doing then contact your congressman or whoever will listen to get them to stop this. This operation will be getting started soon so it may be too late.

I think even then it would've been ineffective so long as the other side of the lake (next to the neighborhood) was off limits. That's where the majority of the mouflon hung out most of the time (at least during season).

He's right you know...and when they go to lunch the TU graduate serves them the best McDonalds fries ever! |
Well haven’t been on here in awhile, are all the exotics still gone.

I've got no info on the exotics but curious myself. |
Anyone ever hunt area 4?

What kind of info you need? 4 is boat only but depending on athleticism it can be done with a kayak or canoe. Aside from that it's pretty much like the other areas out here with subtle differences here and there.
|
We can boat in, that's not a problem. Looks to be all private land surrounding it.
Curious if anyone had any reports from this season or what they have seen in there. |
I haven't been over there this season but we used to hunt it heavily and taken a bunch of animals there. We kinda started phasing out 4 a few years ago due to so much traffic. Seems like everybody who's got a boat concentrates over there and they'll park right next to your boat and walk in on you, just too many hunts ruined. There's plenty of animals though, but that goes for all the areas out here.
