Aluminum Scooter Tower Boat Build

Going to build an aluminum Scooter and rig it with a redfish tower.

The hull is .125 5052 H32. The stringers and bracing will be .125 6061T6 1x2 and 1x1 square tube.

Building the whole thing out of my garage with basic hand tools and a Lincoln square wave tig 200.

Oh and Iím already actually finished with it and already running it duck hunting and fishing. I didnít have time to post as I was building it so just start now with the progress pictures.

hoythitman 02-05-2018 08:38 PM

In for the build.

Step back and eyeball it. Dotted lines or go with the current cut? Decisions, decision.

Cut both sides out and Crowned the main stringers. Welded 2Ē pipe along the front, tacked the stringers to the pipe and pressed them from the ceiling with my ďhelperĒ as I welded them in place to curve the bow of the hull. Bending a 6í wide sheet of aluminum by hand wasnít going to happen so I employed this method with pretty good results.

BURTONboy 02-05-2018 09:09 PM

In for this. Thats freakin awesome that you built a boat in your garage from scratch!

Sides on, some bracing in, and the tunnel fabbed up. I ran all the bracing for and aft instead of side to side to ovoid the rippling and denting effect that you see in other boats that have the stringers side to side.

In!!!!!

Tall Tex 02-05-2018 09:38 PM

Love scooter boats. How tall a tower did you put on it. Really want to put a tower on my 16ft majek skiff

A little rusty but itís like riding a bike right?

Hawkpuppy 1 02-05-2018 09:52 PM

Man this is gonna be awesome! Just out of curiosity, why not put the pontoons flush with the bottom of the hull?

I canít give that away yet. Haha, but your Majek would do just fine with a medium height tower.

Cajun shooter 02-05-2018 09:56 PM

A little rusty? Are you calling that a little rusty?!

They are only about 1/4Ē to 3/8Ē difference from the bottom of the hull and I was thinking they would act as somewhat of a trim tab as the water came off the bottom of the main hull and help lift the boat as the water and trapped air came into contact with them. Thatís the idea anyway.

I cut a slot lengthwise in 1Ē pipe with a circular saw for my cap rail and welded it in place. Lots of long welds on the chine edge and the cap rail. Plenty of time under the hood during this project.

I have a Lincoln Square Wave Tig 200. Itís an inverter machine. Wished I would have had a nice mig setup though for the long runs.

I was going to say I bet those runs sucked. But at least you know it will be one heck of a boat!!

Can't wait to see the progress.....

Rebuilt one very similar a few years ago but removed the tower and went with a grab bar with tiller drive. Extremely fun little sled just didn't have the time to two boats and sold it.

Quackerbox 02-06-2018 11:59 AM

I can hear that thing now with a 70 on it!!!

^^^
and thats a neat little boat with the jet

I almost went that same route then decided to try the tower idea out.

bboswell 02-06-2018 12:19 PM

Impressed so far!

UncleBubba 02-06-2018 12:45 PM

Muddy Bud 02-06-2018 01:03 PM

Wow, this thing is coming along nicely. Can't wait to see the final hull once it's complete.

God that brand new aluminum is sexy!

TXBRASS 02-06-2018 01:05 PM

Will you coat the exterior with line-x or something similar or just paint?

It moved when I saw that pic of your boat. I would absolutely love a setup like that...

AZST_bowhunter 02-06-2018 03:44 PM

It happens....lol.

Wish I hadn't sold it and my son still reminds me. Scooters have a purpose and are a blast. Would literally run in 2" of hard bottom water without skipping a beat. Had a 3" tunnel and would cavitate even with scoops going with any chop though. Gave the guy who bought it the prop lower to change out when needed.

Now please post some more updates!

Took a few extra hands but the boat only weighed about 350 pounds at that point in the build.

Hawkpuppy 1 02-06-2018 06:47 PM

You have some seriously impressive talent
