    Cedar trees & fence posts

My place in La Grange is LOADED with cedar trees and I was going to put them to good use as fence posts. My neighbor was telling me that I cannot use them because they’re the wrong type and will rot within 5 yrs. I’m not a tree person but, did he not let them dry enough and they became worthless or is he correct?

The cedar in my area makes horrible fence post. Not enough heart in them

    He may be right

He's right. It will probably last longer than 5 years but not near as long as mountain cedar.

That’s depressing, I have a lot of new fence to put up and wanted to save some money. I guess I’ll just bulldoze them over in January.

Thanks, I’ll give them a call. I have a lot that are 18”+ in diameter.

I think for post it needs to be mountain cedar

                        Juniperus ashei

                        Secondary Names:
                        Mountain Cedar

I’ve had some from that area last a vey long time. Cut them in January or February when the sap is down. Look for the red heart. If it’s got a big one use it. If it doesn’t pitch it in the burn pile.
