Little later than normal this year kicking off a new thread but we gotta do it sometime, figure the start of a new hunting season is as good a time as any. Hopefully get a nice clean break from the old thread.
Good luck to everyone in the ‘20-‘21 season |

I look forward to following this thread, and contributing to it. My girlfriend and I drew whitetail permits and got our general hunting permits for hogs.
Good luck to all y'all |

Wait... When is the draw? <sarcasm>
|
Good luck all, grew up in Grapevine and ran around that lake lots during high school.
Deer are even into the neighborhoods near NW highway, I see tracks about a block from my mom's house. |
Anyone here been dove hunting at the vine before?

This place is a JUNGLE!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...15a024eb51.jpg

Welcome to the Vine, where mosquitoes are as big as hummingbirds and swarm like bees!
Found someone's nifty little setup [emoji849]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cd1eea9721.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fa6422d3c8.jpg Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk |
Interesting setup. I can't fully knock it though; I've killed a few deer including 1 buck sitting about that high off the ground. I don't like the mesh though.
Regarding the growth, I wish they could do some burns out there to knock down some of the vegetation that's overgrown the past 4-5 years. I'm not sure how that works being semi-close to some houses and roads but I feel like it'd help the huntability. |
@troy_w_7 for real, the undergrowth and grasses are thick

Has anyone been able to use the map on ARCGIS? I'm about to call the corps office. I registered and logged in, but says I don't have access.
The "printable map" is not detailed at all. Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk |

Does anyone have factual information of how many applicants apply for 250 permits?

This was my first year applying for the vine, didn't get picked though sadly. But, if anyone shoots a really nice, big P&Y and needs help dragging it out, just give me a text and drop me a pin with On X to your EXACT location and ill be out there in about an hour to help you drag it out.
|
Me and my son both got picked. It’s nice to be able to go hunt after work During the week.
Good luck everyone. |
Put 7 miles on the boots today, made a couple nice finds. Looks like someone is afraid of heights...https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...29b31ac2d1.jpg

Cool shed though, it must be from a Grapevine fawn. Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk |

I was a pretty annoyed by both of them.. some people’s kids... and better watch out walking past the screw in steps guy, I might hit my head on the platform! The shed was a fun find even if it was small, maybe I’ll run into his older brother or dad sometime Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Anyone have eyes on how the water looks out there? Hoping to get out this weekend to scout for waterfowl and if any of the slews and side ponds have any water in em. If we happen across some teal we can jump then great.
Don’t have a boat so the creek is out of the water is high at all. But hoping we can trudge through the jungle to a few key spots. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Might as well hunt from the ground. haha
The stuff I have seen out there never seems to amaze me |
I was lucky enough to get drawn this year. I'm usually not that lucky with draws, but plan on taking full advantage. I've been out there several times over the past month and have seen deer every time, including a small buck at 1:00 in the afternoon last weekend when I walked up on a bed. There is no shortage of deer and pigs out there, but there's also no shortage of people so that will make things interesting to say the least.
When I got back to my car I think I had between 30-40 mosquito bites. Needless to say I will be purchasing a Thermacell and Permethrin for bow season. I recommend everyone else that will be hunting out there do the same if they haven't already. lol |

Hunted the vine last year pretty hard. Saw a lot of deer October and November but saw almost nothing in December. Good luck! Fun to be able to hunt close to home.
|
Have you seen the movie Jumanji? Remember the mosquitoes? Yeah a thermacell might help.

Looks like some people are disregarding the 24hr rule on stands... The Corp sends guys in multiple times and they will pull those stands.
Also deer are still around in December and late December but you cant hunt acorn producing trees anymore. Those only work Oct. & Early Nov. gotta hunt thick cover transition edges. I saw my two biggest Vine bucks Dec. 11th and Dec. 29th. |
Drove down 377 tonight around 12:30 and pulled over for what I thought was a cop with their lights on. Turned out to be a GW turning into the lot at Bobcat/377 where there was already another GW with their lights on and a couple other cars. Any of y’all know what was goin on?

I'm new here and was lucky enough to draw a tag out at Grapevine for the first time. I'm certainly not asking for anybody's secrets, but would anyone care to share tips on parking?
Can you park along US 377 where there aren't any no-parking signs? The Corps Fort Worth District Hunting guide states the following: "Vehicles must be parked on Corps designated areas or along roadsides on Corps property without blocking the passage of other vehicles or gate openings. Parking on other public roadways is at your own risk and contacting local law enforcement is recommended." According to the maps, there is Corps land along 377, so the above statement makes me think I can park there as long as there is not a no-parking sign. Any tips/pointers would be appreciated. |

This map is awful by the way.
The one on Arcgis is a little better, but I think I'm going to sign up for the Basemap app.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...79d1a04d99.jpg Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk |
Who else is ready for opening day?! The weather looks BEAUTIFUL!

Beyond thick out there. Went out today. Smh..what was ankle tall last yr is now hip to chest high. Game changer.
|
A few years back I was drawn and wanted to get to a few spots that looked open/shorter grass on aerials but had to walk through 6-7 foot high weeds to get there. After I ran up on 2-3 cottonmouths, I retreated and decided it wasn't worth it. I hate snakes. There's got to be a way to hunt that place now that the vegetation has changed over the past 6-7 years. Hopefully you guys figure it out because I want to see a big one hit the ground! I personally think using a canoe or boat of some sort would be the ticket now.
|
I will get thru it on sun. Gona hunt the afternoon w my son and a buddy. Gona have to machete thru it.
|
Twas on and crackin this evening. Saw lots of animals. No shooters.

Hello, I am new to this forum. I’ve been in the area for about 6 years now. I came from the panhandle and hunted private land up there. I’ve touched my bow once since I’ve over here(Flower Mound) and I miss bow hunting! I’ve always been nervous about hunting public land but there are many opportunities to hunt public near me. I plan to get out next year and give it a go.......anybody willing to pm me so I can pick your brains on the matter. I’m not asking for your best tree to kill deer, I just have some questions about getting started on public land bow hunting around Grapevine and Lewisville.

Gona try to hit it again thurs afternoon if i get off work in time. Gona roll home grab my son and gear and roll. If my sons safety wasnt stuck on his xbow last week he could of easily took a doe or a 3 hogs. I passed on a spike. Saw more though. It was a great opener.
|
Well, I reckon its time I go ahead and dust of the cobwebs and test myself out at Grapevine this coming weekend/week.
Anyone know of primitive campgrounds? I will probably haul my camper up there later, but for now I will be using the suburban as homeless camp. |
Drew grapevine this year for the first time. Went out scouting before the season just to check it out. Went out twice this week to a couple of spots and one of the locations I was going to hunt someone left his stand but removed his sticks. It was too low to setup below and I have a climber so I couldn't just use his. What is the acceptable etiquette for that. I've been surprised how much equipment is left up out there. Aren't they afraid someone will just take it?
