Drawn for 11/13 hunt.

AggieBen 09-02-2020 10:58 AM

I also drew for the 12/4 hunt. I'm new to Archery in general and have never hunted (or been) there, how is it? What kind of hunting is it, S&S , tree stand, etc? Sorry for the rookie questions.

jaredmartin 09-02-2020 10:59 AM

Ben,

there is a lot of past live hunt threads from down there. get on google maps and look at the area. I think area 3 & 8 seem to have the most Nilgai shot in.

It is a hard hunt, but rewarding as well. take a tripod.

thisisbeer 09-02-2020 11:19 AM

I drew for the 11/13. That makes 4 years in a row I believe. Had to cancel the first 3 for various reasons. I am determined to make it this year.

txfirefighter_04 09-02-2020 11:22 AM

I also was drawn for the 12/4 Archery

TildenHunter 09-02-2020 11:36 AM

I drew 11/13, it'll be my first time hunting the Atascosa

Huntindad 09-02-2020 03:27 PM

Anyone get lodging? I am looking to find a house or something down there for the 11/20 hunt.

if you find a place for a different hunt date, let me know & I can see if it is available for 11/20

HighwayHunter 09-02-2020 04:02 PM

Muck boots for walking through the brush, yay or nay? Never been down there before much less hunted in that terrain. Should I get some gaiters or something to protect from cactus?

Huntindad 09-02-2020 04:08 PM

cactus no, snakes yes. need to be water proof.

Cocobulldog 09-02-2020 04:55 PM

Just got the draw for 11/20 hunt. Never been there but looking forward to it. Anyone willing to share some good units info. Also would love to just see a movie would be so cool.

Romulan 09-02-2020 07:24 PM

Pending - really hope to get drawn - one of the most amazing places I’ve been. The birding alone is awesome but throw in the opportunity to harvest whitetail or Nilgai and it’s a truly amazing!

Been there twice - I echo the others in reading past threads - also bring two pairs of boots that are comfortable and broken in (last year I made the mistake of taking new boots- blisters weren’t fun). I also took snake gaiters for brush...and of course snakes - if I get drawn this year I won’t bother with ground blinds- purchased a ghillie suite and think it would work better (wouldn’t walk with it on but put it on at my stand).

Good luck to all! Be safe

FlyGuyy 09-02-2020 07:45 PM

Drawn for the dec hunt as well! So pumped! I had a ball last year on this hunt and I did a live hunt update on the 2019 thread.

Drew 11/13 as well and it'll be our first time too. We did Aransas last year for rifle and to me the terrain looks pretty similar in videos - anyone been to both and can compare?

whirlybird 09-02-2020 09:07 PM

Does anyone have a recommendation on a 6-8' tripod?

If you’re looking for cheap - pickup Big Game Pursuit from Academy or Wal- Mart (or Guide Gear on Sportsman’s Guide) — the legs come in two pieces so just use the top half and with the seat you’d be almost 8 feet (give or take) at eye level.

If you have the cash - I’ve heard Millennium has one at 10 but it’s around $400

MasterOfNothing 09-02-2020 10:59 PM

I'll see everyone 11/13 for archery!

mudmauler 09-02-2020 11:43 PM

Looks like we will be well represented out there. If anybody wants to get a place for the 11/6 hunt i would be willing to go in on it with a group. Otherwise I will be pulling my brothers camper down again. Stock up boys [emoji1370]

Mesquito/tick repellent, rain gear just in case and snake boots, snake boots, snake boots. Did I mention snake boots?

S&S is hard, most of the hunters there last year had blinds, tripods our sat on the ground.
there are some good videos on utube of the place.. gives you an idea what to expected.
Good luck, ill pass this yr if i get drawn..

capn 09-03-2020 05:31 PM

Sent you a pm mudmauler. I'd go in for group lodging on the 11/6 hunt.

I was hoping we would have drawn the same week again. Guess I'll have to find my own kills this year. Good luck to you sir.

whirlybird 09-03-2020 06:59 PM

I got drawn for the 12/4 hunt as well. I have been training for an archery elk hunt coming up later this month so looks like I will keep up the training regimen. Looking forward to putting in miles to find some good spots. Hunting solo as of now but willing to join up with others

Spoiled_TN_boy 09-03-2020 09:16 PM

12/4 draws, let me know if anyone wants to go in on an Airbnb or hotel room. I'm driving down on Wednesday night for the Thursday morning orientation and staying through the 8th.

Also driving down on the 18th after work for scouting weekend. Will be camping at Thomae Park that weekend.

reaganandkristy 09-04-2020 12:38 PM

Brand new here. We got drawn for the Nov 20-24th hunt. I saw that compartment 6 is closed during this hunt. One thing - I called down to the office and bicycles and ebikes are allowed to get around as well. I've hunted El Sauz Ranch, just last year and it butts up to this place, and there was no shortage of Nilgai running freely in the low fenced areas. Will be me and 2 of my kids, wife and youngest son will stay on South Padre Island (hotel/motel rates are decent for that time frame)and we will make the drive daily. We are from the Houston Area.

I’ll be hunting solo as well, but willing to help anyone pack out or track animal during the 12/4 hunt. Or team up with someone.

piercebronkite 09-04-2020 02:35 PM

I went last year and got drawn again this year for the 12/4 hunt.

Also, I will go against the grain and say that snake boots aren't necessary. I had snake chaps on and didn't wear them half the time. Are there snakes? Yes. Did I run in to some? Yes (but they weren't rattlesnakes). Just dont be Jimmy Dicking around out there and watch where you're stepping!

What you should be concerned about is lots of walking or riding a bike and brining spare tubes or tubes with slime.

X2

I say it every year on the Laguna threads, but I’ve hunted Laguna multiple years and hunted south Texas all my life and I do not wear snake boots. I bought a pair of them last year and wore them one time and more than likely won’t wear them again. I just wear merrel hiking shoes and watch where I walk.
