2021 Austin/Colorado/Fayette/Washington Counties Thread
How did everyone's season go? I got a doe Thanksgiving morning, but buck sightings from the stand were few and far between. Hopefully the area gets some good rain with this system moving in. It's been pretty **** dry where we're at.
|
Nada. Hunted hard and I had a couple decent deer coming in and found out the buck I was hunting after was shot just a few days before the season was over with. A couple of lessons learned this year.
1. From Feb-August deer do not show up on the property. From August to the end of October is when deer come around. 2. Deer in the area are mainly nocturnal. 3. We finally have does coming into the feeder which is a first for us!!! 4. The number of Coyotes in the area is astounding and they will eat buckwheat, deer corn, and roasted soy beans. 5. Still no pigs which is good thing but having something else to target would be great. 6. ALWAYS keep the grass trimmed by the feeder. |

5. You can take ours :D. They're not terrible, but enough to **** you off. I transplanted three small yaupons the weekend prior to this past, and they literally dug in that one specific area, which ended up taking the yaupons out of the ground. I guess the freshly turned up soil got them worked up. They were still green, so I replanted them. We'll see what happens. |
Our deer are mostly nocturnal also. I don’t think we have enough cover at our place to make them feel comfortable all season long. The only time we have consistent daylight sightings are mid to late October. We had a nice 8 pt heavy horned buck but he broke off half a side early. I watched a weird 10pt buck on camera all season. I saw him in daylight once. On New Years Eve. I was in my pajamas and he was practically in the back yard. He lives through the general season so maybe I’ll see him next year.
No pig sightings for us either. Did see 2 axis on Christmas evening. |
Our columbus area property... never saw an antlered bick after the third weekend of rifle. Our fayette county property now has pigs. Never killed one at the place till this year. Shot a boar that was pushing 250 lbs.

Just south of Sheridan.
Hunted hard this year as we built a new stand. Saw a bunch of basket rack bucks and more does than I could count. Thanksgiving weekend, not 1 doe! but about 5-6 baskets and a couple spikes Shot my buck on Nov 26. 9 point 15.5" spread. Over thanksgiving I counted 19 shots from the same stand in 4 days. It sounded like WW3. Overall it was a good year. Took my daughter for the first time and we had deer 15 yds from us the whole time. She loved it! Looking forward to many hunts out there with her and hopefully some of these basket bucks develop |

I saw this deer in person on 10/12/19 but couldn't get a shot. My Dad found his skeleton mostly buried in the sand in the wet weather creek that runs through our property. I guess that answers that... HE GONE!

First deer shot on our place in Fayette county since 1986. My brother and his buddies killed an 8 and a 4 back then. We never hunt it. But wife wanted to go camping New Years weekend Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Sorry I’m late to the party. Just finding this thread.
Last year was a bummer for us. We had 5 mature bucks (5+yo) that either didn’t show back up after 2019 season or vanished prior to hunting in 2020. Only 6 year old that returned got a pass from everyone on our team but disappeared mid-November and still hasn’t showed up. Haven’t killed a deer since 2018 and won’t have any returning 6 year olds to hunt this year. We will have a few 5 year olds that might make the list if they add enough inches. Pastures are in great shape right now. But we need a gully washer to fill the ponds. GL everybody. |
The old hunting in flip flops! Nice!

Colorado county
Had a decent year at our place in Mentz. Wife shot biggest buck we have taken, a good solid heavy 130 “ buck and shot 3 does. Saw lots of bucks, just small 8”s. Looking forward to checking my cameras and seeing what’s around this year.

Got a picture of her buck someone wants to put it on here. Im not very good at that stuff.

I almost forgot about this thread ha ha! Some really nice looking deer. Looks like we got some much needed rain. Our pond got about a foot higher with the rain from last week. Should be full now :).

My sons girlfriend came over and said there was a deer just standing by the gate and didn’t move as they went by. Two hours later she left and said the deer was dead. We live about a mile from a main road. I’m guessing he got hit. And stumbled our way and died

Our ponds were 14-16" low before the rain a week or so ago. Filled pretty much up with that one, this one has the dam roaring :D as well as the creek up into the middle pasture. I'm sure I'll be cleaning my feeder out again after it goes down...oh well, the hogs will have the soured corn cleaned up in no time ;)b unfortunately, I will more than likely have to replace 4 of my cameras, they're underwater again

Ya if youve got ponds around New Ulm or Industry, they should be full. We’ve had 12”+ in the last week or so.

I believe it. We got buckets dumped tonight in Cat Spring and alittle north and west had it worse.

Im a little north and west. Although on the southern portion of the bad part. Our lower fence was all but under water and the road pretty well washed out. Counties got a lot of gravel roads to fix for the second time in a week. I dont know how much rain we got, but it was coming in sideways and hard as ever. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
Rain. And rain. And more rain. Then it rained some more. The deer might float away. TONS of rain in Burton
|
We have had probably 12+ inches of rain in the last week in La grange. And some tornado activity to boot last week
|
Our tanks are over flowing North of Columbus. I hope we aren’t getting all the summer rain at once.

found a cam card I hadn't checked, I saw this guy preseason but never during general season. Hope he and his buddy made it. ;)b

Had our first sighting of a buck at our place. Alittle earlier than normal here by a couple weeks. Usually they disappear all summer long. I guess they go into the Mill Creek bottom or the deep woods.

Anybody sit in the stand this past weekend? I didn't really feel like it, but I sat Saturday evening because of the wind direction, and saw a doe & a yearling. They got behind me and the doe raised all sorts of hell. Go figure...
|
We lost our place south right after season. It closed in July so we had time to get our stuff off. Funny part is the people who bought it put cameras up on our feeder and filled it. Guess they thought we were leaving our blinds and feeders. Had to dump 300lbs of corn out.
Hauled everything off in mid june. Buried the jeep getting the blind out so they now have some big ruts to get to the feeder. We got everything moved to one of our cattle leases and now dealing with the neighbors dogs. HE has been warned about them chasing our newborns but now we have proof with the camera. Have a couple bucks on camera but I wont get to sit until after football season. |

Our farm to market road hasn’t been kind to us.
We have had two good bucks hit by cars. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Had a couple of new good bucks show up on camera over the weekend...Means the boys are starting to look for some ladies!!
|
Sat all weekend, was pretty slow. Saw a couple small/young bucks, couple does, and couple fawns. The mature 8 I have on camera every day over the summer quit coming in 5-6 days ago. Same for a handful of nice younger bucks. Hope to sit this weekend with the front coming in.
|
Curious what yall are seeing as far as rutting activity in the Shelby area? Seems like they should be getting close.

I was expecting it to be starting here in the next week or two. Thinking maybe this good cool front coming thru Friday might help get it kicked off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
I've seen a few young and dumb bucks chasing uninterested doe...other than that, I haven't noticed anything yet. But its about time for it to kick off for sure. I need to check my camera that I put down at the edge of the creek bank, to see if any surprises are trying to slip through undetected
|
Sat this morning and saw four different bucks. One was cruising, one was bumping does around, & the one bumping does sparred with another buck as well. Most of the activity was between 7:45 & 8:30.
|
Tagging this thread to keep up with Colorado county action. Wife’s grandpa has about 90 acres just east of Weimar he wants us to try and hunt some.
