2021-2022 Hill Country Hunting Thread
Its about that time to start a new thread for this upcoming season! We did not get a lot of rain in March or April in Llano county, some of our smaller ponds dried up but now they are full again. Opening day is only about 4 months away now and I am starting to see a few familiar faces at my feeders.
I hope we all have a great season this year!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fdf53ec2c9.jpg Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk |
Nice growth. He's no youngster either.
It's extremely dry in Brady. It rains all around us but rarely where I'm at. Watching the radar is frustrating to say the least. We've had 3" since January. |
I’m not sure how many inches we’ve gotten in our little part of Doss but I know it’s been a pretty good year for us. That’s unusual because we are down in a hole and can usually watch the rain go right around us. Deer have been hammering the feed. I should be down there next week to fill feeders again and check cameras. I’m pumped to see what they are gonna look like this year.
|
Thanks for starting up the thread Kyle! It also looks like your bucks are well on their way again this year. Thankfully we started getting a little rain towards the end of March through now. We have missed out on all the big rains, so our tanks are all bone dry, but at least we have wells and troughs. I pray it keeps raining through summer.
|
We are dang near floating in llano. It’s been a good spring so far.
|
Finally getting some good rain in Llano the past few weeks. The deer have been hammering the feed so far. Our place is really green now, with all the recent rain. Our creeks and tanks did not go dry and have had water in them all year. Looking forward to start watching the horns grow.

8 inches for the month of May at my place in Gillespie County. Perfect timing. Pastures are so green you couldn't see the roads to blinds two weeks ago. Gonna be a good year.
|
Im glad to hear most of yall are getting good rain. I'm going this weekend to fill some feeders. I think this is going to be my target buck for this year, he is a 7 year old buck named Ochohttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8cd423352e.jpg

So very thankful for this mornings rain! No where near enough to run any water, but I’m thankful for every drop!

I've seen a few sika that have black spots like that spike in the middle picture. Usually if they have spots, the spots will be white. But the darker colored ones will have a few black spots sometimes.

I forgot to save any deer pictures from last trip. Deer are hammering protein and cotton seed even though it is super green. I also just picked up and additional 500 acres connected to this spot. I have a few mature deer coming in but I can really only identify one so far. Stoked to see what this year brings. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Going to make a quick trip tonight just to pull camera cards. Nothing like a 5 hour drive just to check antler growth. I am thankful for my 1 cell cam though!

Looking good. I was at my lease last week. Saw lots of whitetail. Pigs are freaking EVERYWHERE. Killed 7. We were hoping to kill some rutting axis bucks. Killed a couple does, but didn't see a shooter buck. I called one in. He bellowed and raked a tree about 80 yards from me on the fence line. I saw the tree limbs shaking, but the brush was too thick to see him. He must have had does with him. He didn't come in to the call/rattling any further. We have maybe 10% of the axis we had before the freeze. It really sucks. Heard a few bellows, but nothing like what it was in years past during the rut. Normally, the bellows were nearly constant day and night. Just a few here and there this time.
I wish I could get excited about the whitetail, but they're just jackrabbits down there. |
We lost most if not all of our blackbucks from the freeze. But out WT’s are looking really good and lots of fawns dropped so far. The biggest suck is literally every oak tree has broken branches. So had to move most blinds and/or spend days cutting. It is like a tornado went through the entire place. Thousands of acres decimated. Its crazy
|
Yeah, every tree has half the branches laying on the ground after all that ice. It was a devastating winter storm.

Attachment 1054622 Attachment 1054623 Attachment 1054624 Saw several turkey (hens) with babies!!! No pics but I was glad to see them. Saw three jakes and two big boys. Saw a ton of deer overall. Wished I would have taken more pics. Saw one really good 9 point. Deer looked healthy overall. It was turning brown but like mentioned in my above post it looks like we've picked up some rain since I was there. |

Those bucks are looking good!! We have also seen a few hens with poults lately. Our Turkey numbers have been way down, I sure would love a rebound.
This guy scored around 135-140” last year, I sure hope he’ll be at least that big this year. |
lookin good
|
Its still super green by us. I'm hoping this buck clears 140" as a main frame 8. I will be at a wedding in Puerto Rico for opening weekend so the other guys on the lease may get a chance at him before me.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...df36cf676b.jpg

Man that looks like a beautiful place!
|
Y’all have me itching to get to the lease and check my cameras. It was nice and green about 5 weeks ago. Maybe I can get up for a day or two soon. I’m south of Junction about 15 miles on 83.

Been sitting for Axis in Kerrville the mornings and sitting for hogs at night in Harper. Not seeing any hogs and where the axis used to be plentiful, i think the Feb freeze killed a great many of them. This is the first time in 11 years hunting this Axis spot that there has been more whitetails than Axis. The native species is winning here. Sitting for hogs again tonite.
