Taking a road trip with only a paper map.

We took a ride to the deer lease yesterday to check feeder batteries, and we had our 15-year-old daughter navigate with a paper map. It was an interesting and fun road trip. We plan on taking a longer trip this summer and do the same thing.

That is great. Be surprised at how many men can’t read a map these days.

      No surprise at all.

Most folks that have grown up in the iPhone age never used one.

Let them get a glimpse of our struggles back in the day.

I carry one in my vehicles. It is good to see the different roads available when your riding around in the hill country and other places on vacation.

At a very young age, I taught both our kids to read a map and to use a compass. Our daughter and family are leaving today on a cruise... I was talking to her yesterday and was going over some things we will do for them while they are gone. It's my grandson's first cruise.. They're really excited... I asked my daughter if she had her compass... She said absolutely. She carries the same one I gave her when she was about 10 years old... When she went on her first trip alone with a church group, they got lost from their tour bus, and she used her compass to get the group back to where they were supposed to be... She's carried it ever since that trip anytime she travels somewhere new/remote... Sometimes electronics fail... a regular old lensatic compass always works.

Try buying a map while out on the road. Every gas station had them now it’s an unicorn

When our kids were old enough to read and ride in the front seat, they learned how to read a map and give directions

Glad to hear people are still teaching kids to read maps!

Like most everyone who grew up in the pre-GPS era, we had a big stack of maps in the glove box. As a kid I would while away the hours studying them on road trips. GPS directions will get you there and I use them. However I first look at a map (usually digital now). It helps me get oriented- I want to know exactly where I am on the planet and where my destination is in relation to it.

My son used to navigate on all of or vacations with maps. To this day he is extremely versed at it.

I didn't let he send me in the wrong direction because I knew where I was going. Later in the summer, we are going to take some back road trips and let her navigate 100% and see where we end up.

Did you drive 55mph the whole way?
