    Dog eye sight question.

I've had my rat terrier for about 13 years now. He's still in good health. Problem is he's starting to get some cloudiness in his eyes and is having a hard time seeing. Seems like I read about some drops you can get to help with this. Has anyone ever got any of that for your dog and did it help? I'd like for him to have as good of quality of life as I can give him and it's sad to see your dogs go downhill. If I can help him see better that's what I'm gonna do.

Are you sure the pup can't see. Our yorkie is 12 and has the cloudiness and can still see better than I can. I wouldn't trust a vet to make a diagnosis either. He just about killed our yorkie with a missed diagnosis.

Might want to check him for diabetes. My last male Rottie started getting cloudy eyes and it was because he was a diabetic (BAD) and basically was going blind. I hope yours is not this!

The only reason I think he can't see very good is because if it's somewhat dark he bumps into stuff. Lets say in the hallway and in walking down it, he follows me everywhere I go. If I'm walking toward him and stop he'll bump into me. So the lighter it is in the house the better he can see. I just can't say for sure how much better. Also if I'm sitting at the table eating I'll toss him some scraps and he won't see them unless I literally drop something on his nose. So I think he can't see worth a hoot.

I tried to get a picture so y'all can see what I'm seeing. The son of a gun won't hold still long enough and he's grouchy. He'll bite the heck out of me if I try to grab his face and hold it there.

              Cataracts maybe?

I'm thinking so. He's not got it too bad in one eye but pretty cloudy in the other.

13 years for a small breed is pretty dang old. Our chihuahua went blind like that. Then he got mean and grouchy before he died.

He's definitely getting up there in age. Still eats good and plays with my other dog. She's just a puppy still but they run around the house and wrestle every day.

Good luck to you buddy it's hard to see that progression. They aren't man's best friend for a reason.

Yes it is. What really stinks is he was actually my grandmas dog. He'd sit in her recliner with her all day while I was at work. He got to where he wouldn't even sleep in my room at night he'd rather go lay by her at night. He's really the only thing left that I've got that was hers.

Best dog I've ever had, by far.

My JRT went blind in just two weeks from diabetes. A canine ophthalmologist and $6K later he could see again. That was 5/6 years ago and he’s just about blind again. He has trouble at night except in the house. Poor guy has had lots of problems unrelated to sight, but he’s my buddy and I’m gonna keep him above ground as long as I can. Good luck !

He's quite the character. He wasn't but a few months old when he got hit by a car. One of his back legs had to be amputated. It hasn't and still doesn't slow him down. He's a go getter.

Dang it, sucks watching them age. I feel the same about this guy. Might cost me a leg to keep him around but oh well. If all that's wrong is his eye sight we're gonna consider ourselves lucky.
