    Measuring draw length question

Sorry for the rookie question....I know trad bows but pretty much zero about compounds.

Is the draw length measured to the back of the riser or the deepest part of the grip? (or neither)

I've got a compound that according to the installed modules should be 26" but when I draw the string until it stops it is 3-4" in front of my chin with a slightly-bent bow arm. I'm right at 29" with a "thumb on cheekbone" anchor with a trad bow.

I would need another 5-6" of draw-length with this bow to get close to an anchor point. I wouldn't think I have 30+" draw with a compound.

    Thanks,
    Mike

To determine your proper draw length, stand upright, spread your arms out to the side and have someone measure your wingspan between the fingertips of your middle fingers. Then, divide that measurement by 2.5.

Draw length on a compound is measured to the deepest part of the grip PLUS 1.75". So if its 26.25" to the deepest part of the grip, that is 28" of draw length on a mod chart etc. Multiple ways to very roughly estimate it as mentioned above there is the wingspan method, there is also the wall method, NockOn has a video on this I believe. Your draw length is going to be notably longer with a compound than a recurve. There is a big difference being able to expand your torso to hold 10-15# vs 40-60#.

Thanks for the replies guys. This bow is 24" to the deepest part of the grip - close to the 26" it should be according to the installed modules. Another inch can be added but I'll need a bow press.

Using the wingspan / 2.5 method my draw-length should be 27.8"

Keep in mind the wingspan method is a rough starting point and doesn't account for longer arms or a super wide chest. I should be a 25.5" draw by that method, but with proper form and alignment (and a thumb release) I'm at 27.25". My trad draw is just a hair under 26".

Go to a wall. Make a fist and place knuckles on wall with arm bent and form, just like shooting. Look at same wall and have someone measure: wall - corner of mouth
