Lefty eye dominate but right handed

Long story short. Wife is ready for a bow.

We go check out a couple at Cabelas. Want her to be able to shoot it, so the lady working in the archery shop get's it set up.

My wife draws back the bow, and the lady helping us immediately notices she has her right eye closed and left eye open. And then says my wife will need a left handed bow. Based on eye dominance.

    What says the green screen?

just close the left and open the right, if she's not going to leave them both open.

Eye dominance matters if shooting both eyes open.

But… I know people who can close one eye but have trouble doing the same with the other.

First off, I’m kind of surprised anyone from a Cabela’s (or Bass Pro) archery department actually knows left from right.

Seriously though, this isn’t all that uncommon. Try having her actually have her left eye covered which would force her to keep the right eye open. See how she shoots. If she’s close to being where she should be, she just needs to learn to keep her left eye closed, or both open while using her right eye.

That doesn’t always work. I actually gave a left hand bow my wife had been shooting before we upgraded hers to a forum member a couple of months ago for the exact same reason, member was Playa in fact.

He said he has this issue and apparently his daughter does as well. I’ve heard from him a time or two since she started shooting and it seemed like it was going fairly well. She may just have to learn to shoot left handed if the other route doesn’t work, in which case find her a highly adjustable starter bow so there’s a broad range for draw weight. She’ll have to build up the strength in her left arm, but it can be done effectively.

I'm right handed and left eye dominant...no problemo; I just close my left eye.

Do what I did. Practice daily shutting each eye independently. Best advice my dad ever told me was learn to shoot right and left handed. I love it when I don’t even notice I switched and you hear “did you just shoot that left handed?”

Did it for years, never once had a problem. Had an instructor at an Olympic training camp I attended for skeet work on it with me. He taught me to force dominance by making my left eye blurry. Took a long time, but I now shoot with both open, and can actually shoot firearms with either hand easily. Still only shoot archery RH do to bows not being able to swap hands.

Get her a left handed bow it will be much easier for her to learn

Same here. Practice practice practice. I enjoy shooting rifle left handed and do it often so I don’t have to move in the box blind.

If she's just starting out I would try a left handed bow. I tried to switch about 12yrs into bowhunting and couldn't make the switch.

                            Thanks for the input.

Called Double G and am going to bring her there. He has some Genisis bows he uses to teach new shooters. So, she will get to shoot and decided for her self.

Was really thinking the best thing to do is shoot right handed and just close the left eye. Open the right and practice.

We just happened to be near Cabelas today getting our taxes done. We stopped in as they had bow bows I wanted her to hold. Both I felt were going to be a good fit for her.

One was the Basspro Blackout, and the other was Diamond. I'm leaning to Diamond because the Double G can get her one in a couple weeks.

Again thanks for the input. I'll let ya'll know if we go RH or LH.

Both of my kids are same. I just taught them from the beginning to shoot lefty. They both shoot rifles amazing for their age and daughter shoots a bow pretty well. Will also help when they take up wing shooting
