    Pemmican

1lb venison- dried on dehydrator for 2 days to make completely dry.
Grind in a blender until almost powder

1.5 lbs beef fat rendered to about 3/4 cup

Add dry berries 1/2 cup give or take. I had date’s and cranberries.
    Mix and let cool.
This is the first time trying this. Supposed to be good dang near forever un refrigerated. Apparently this was a staple for trappers, natives and anyone else who just needed nutrition when game was hard to come by.

    Still
Cooling so I have not tried it yet

Curious to know what you think. I've never heard of this. I see butter... did you add butter as well?

No butter, another fella here at the fire station had just used it for his meal

Just ate some. Not bad. I salted the meat and out in a fridge to help cure it some and didn’t wash it off before I dried it so it’s a tad salty but not terrible. Over time I’ll eat more and give updates.

I have heard of this, thought about trying it, but had come to my senses when I told myself, "Clay, this is what they ate in the 1700s when it was a life or death situation." aka, even in the 1700s, they had to be near death to even consume it

All that said, I bet it is a step back into history and would try it if I ever had the opportunity! Make it for myself? Probably not!

This has been on my “to try” list for quite a while, but every time I make jerky it disappears before I get around to making pemmican.

Thanks for the reminder and glad it turned out alright

you inspired me to try it.

Not bad! I didn't quite follow your ratio and next time would add more rendered fat since i've got a bit of a crumbling problem. Good flavor though.

                        Very nice,
I’m going to make a little more if I can kill an axis or find some really cheap beef.

Looks good but try rendered bone marrow instead of the beef fat. That is more traditional and will be a bit sweeter. Also no need to salt your jerky, just dry it without seasoning - or very little salt if used.
