    Ducking Buck

This buck came in at 20 yards and stood broadside eating corn under my ladder stand this afternoon. When a couple does were pawing at each other, I drew. His front leg was back as he ate. When he stepped forward I sent the arrow toward his armpit.

    Then the ducking buck ducked.

Arrow hit him high. Exit was lower and he was bleeding as he ran off. I hoped for at least an off side lung. Gave him an hour, and then I got on the trail with my rifle.

Tracked blood 450 yards to the fence. Got permission from the neighbor to follow. There was a big splash of blood where he jumped the fence, but then nothing. I finally found some blood on some tall grass about 150 yards past the fence, but then nothing.

All the blood looked like muscle blood. Pretty sure I hit him through the backstraps.

Sucks. First big buck shot off the place we bought last fall. Pic from trail camera as he came in to the feed pen.

That's a big ducking buck! Maybe he will be back with a cool scar.

I hope so. Been seeing a bunch of different bucks the last few days. First time I saw this one, and blew it.

Yep. I’ve had a doe completely duck under the arrow at 20. Whitetail are jumpy critters sometimes.

Great buck and I bet he'll be back! Some of them are ninjas for sure!

That's a nice looking buck. Hate that for ya. Did he seem jittery and nervous coming into the area? It's interesting to see how they can react to a shot. I shot one this year at 22-25 yards and he never knew what hit him. Of course he came in cool & calm so I was pretty fortunate

And now a buck. I don't recall having that happen to me but it could be that the larger bucks are not as skeered as the little ones.

He was totally calm. Had his head down eating corn. There were 6 does in the pen when he got there, so he wasn’t cautious or nervous at all.

I saw a video a couple months ago about deer ducking bad when their head is down and don’t duck much when their head is up. I didn’t think about that when I shot today. Maybe I should have waited for him to lift his head up.

                    Should you considered a dog?

I thought about coming to town to get Zach’s dog. But I hoped I’d see the deer and get a shot with my rifle. The neighbor ranch has had most of the brush cleared and is pretty open. Maybe the dog would have been the way to go though.

600+ yards without a lot of blood makes me think I just hit muscle.

We have the dog at our house today. I could have….

I think there’s something to it. The doe I shot at that ducked the arrow had her head down when I shot. A couple weeks later I had another doe in front of me. I aimed low. She had her head up. She didn’t duck. I shot right under her brisket. [emoji2957]

Interesting and never thought about that.
The buck I shot came in nose to the ground to a pile of buck bourban i had poured out on the ground earlier that day. Now I can't recall at the time i released if he still had his head down or not.
Hopefully he returns or lives to give you a chance next season
