Large Oak uncomfortably close to my roof line.

Can I notch the sucker without killing it?

I'd notch the eve of the house.

I would not. Cutting the eve back is a way better idea if you want to keep the tree.

I'd be more concerned about what the tree is doing to the foundation. Dead or alive, that's way too close to the house for my comfort.

          Yep, this ^^^^

I love big trees and love them around the house but big oaks that close to the foundation would worry me way more than how close it is to the fascia board.

Not only foundation, but septic tanks, water lines, and sewer lines as well.

Trees are nice, but that looks like a disaster waiting to happen.

Yeah it's been doing that for 40+ years. Big part of me wants to just remove it. But man, the summer heat it blocks from noon to sundown is almost worth the seasonal sticky doors.

                  That's certainly becoming the option.

I'd turn that tree into a stump. That's a hazard to your family and your home.

                      Either
                      1) Take the tree completely out because it is entirely too close to the foundation and will cause more harm than good long term
                      2) Cut off that scaffold limb back to the trunk. You can see that it has a major bark inclusion and very weak crotch angle. Its a ticking time bomb.

The house is likely supporting that scaffold limb. Create a roof notch and remove the support and it will shuck onto your roof. Then you might get a free skylight when it falls and punches a hole in your roof.

                      Good luck MrBrandon

Take that thing out, If it falls it will kill someone (not worth it) plant a fast grower out from the house.

Luckily it's not quite making contact with the last row of shingles yet. Very close though. The discoloration is from a wet clump of leaves that had dammed up there.

What's strange is, I know for certain I looked up there at that spot several times earlier this year and there had been about an inch/half- 2 inch gap there. Having been in drought all year, I figured it would longer before it got THIS close.

Word, let-alone the roof! Both are proof that tree needs to go!

This is what we did about 20 yrs ago plus taking off a long limb that reached over the roof. Trunk hasn't moved a bit since then.
