Questions on Huisache Disposal and Cut Stump Method

Have about 30+ acres of Huisache to clean up in old rice field.
I have been cutting the stump about an inch high and treating with Remedy, but since this is a manual job for me I'm wondering a couple things to make this easier LoL

For the larger trees, has anyone ever cut about 2 foot high so they're viewable then sprayed with Remedy? I was thinking they would eventually rot and I could push over with tractor in a couple years. Wondering if others do this as cutting with the chainsaw so low is a pain.

Best method to dispose of the trees? Allow to rot a couple years then burn?
Any other ideas other than hauling?

Man, that's a rough issue. The last two organisms that will survive on Earth will be cockroaches and Huisache.

      Huisache

I have cut and sprayed thousands of Huisache bushes and trees at my place in Fayette county. I have used every method to try to kill it including cutting a bunch of trees with a chainsaw at the base as you have suggested.

It does work but since the freeze last year I use this turbo saw. It allows me to cut it close to the ground and then spray it.

Most of you guys dealing with this know that after the big freeze last spring we thought it killed a bunch of the larger Huisache trees only to find out by the end of the summer that the roots were still alive and then new shoots were coming back stronger than ever at the base of the tree.

This tool is especially important now that you cant get to the base of the tree with a chainsaw and cleanly cut all the shoots and the tree.

Cut a few and then get off the tractor and spray the heck out of the stump area.

There is a new herbicide out now called Invora (it is restricted use) that supposedly works better than Remedy/diesel. I have been using it but it is to early to tell how good it will work in the long term to keep if from coming back.

Last fall I drove around my place on my mule and sprayed as many as I could see with Remedy/Diesel. Was told that I could probably get about an 80% kill rate. Looking at them now, that is about what I got. I am waiting for another couple of months and I will load up the mule with beer and Remedy and do it again.

I would just keep spraying with Remedy/Garlon Ultra. It WILL kill them. 80% on one spray is a pretty good yield.

I removed some your update just to comment on the Invora. Our county extension agent had good things to say about it but apparently a lot of restrictions as you mention.

I have had high percentage kills with one treatment of Remedy/diesel. I qt. of remedy to 1 gal. of diesel. Trunk spray 12-18" up from the ground. On trees 3'' diameter or larger, skin some of the bark off with a hatchet to expose fresh wood and spray that heavy. Just kill them before running a dozer, otherwise they come back mad - multiple root suckers. They tend to rot fairy quick when dead. Hire a few "asylum seekers" to cut them with chain saws if your don't have a dozer.

I’ve been working on my 200 acres In Weimar. Haven’t targeted them specifically in about 8-9 years. My dad is on the skid steer with a mulcher/grinder. He drives up to it and grinds it off at ground level and I spray it immediately. The only ones not dead that we have ground are the ones that I miss cause he got to far in front and I was not paying attention. Those little suckers come back with a vengeance from the crown. Everything that I have sprayed is dead. 80/20 diesel remedy I pack a good pair of loppers and anything smaller than 1” I just lop off at an inch or so and spray. He grinds everything else. Big ones are 10-12 inch trees. I’ll spray roughly 25 gallons of diesel to get across my place Now is the prime time. Hot , dry, soil pulled away from the trunk. Spray will either absorb and translocate or will run down to the crown with nothing in its way.

To answer your question about cutting high as long as you spray the bottom 12-18” it will absorb it. Also you can spray the tops of the cut trunks but that may waste chemical. Either or. Dead is dead though. They rot quickly once they die. I’m only grabbing the big stuff with a grapple. Everything 3’ tall or less I’m leaving. The disk or renovator will chop it up when I roll over the pastures

I use Grazon P+D as a foliage spray. Do it in the fall right before it get cold and they go dormant.
