July was a pretty tough month for the Guthrie Clan. On June 27th, just days before we were about to start our family vacation in Green Bay, I get a call from the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office telling me my father last away.
Dealing with that while on vacation, we returned on the 16th of July around 9:30 that evening. I walked in my house after an 18 hr drive (3 youngins and 3 dogs crammed in a minivan), only to be greeted by the god-awful stench of death.
Knowing exactly what happened, I ran to the garage. The smell…. I can’t put into words.
My deep freezer, being on a GFI circuit, had popped. Years worth of meat, including my black bear that I shot in September (Took me 10 years to draw that tag), gone. Deer, duck, pig, beef, quail, fish….gone. Everything I feed my family with had rotted so bad, the vacuum bags swelled to bacteria and mold-filled balloons.
While I was standing there in utter disbelief, my wife yells, “Babe, the refrigerator stopped working, too.”
I ran in the kitchen and to my horror, spoiled and rotted blood, etc. was bleeding out of my kitchen refrigerator and spewed all over the floor.
Unlike my deep freezer that stopped working due to the GFI circuit popping, my refrigerator just broke. Compression gave up the ghost.
We stayed up till 1:30 in the morning cleaning up that mess. In total, we lost $1,000’s of dollars and over 300 lbs of meat and groceries.
I posted on Facebook what happened and soon after, my inbox started blowing up with offers of support. Most of these offers where money. Many of my friends are non-hunters, so when they read my post, it sounded like I hunted because that’s the only way I can afford to feed my family. Any hunter know that’s far from the truth. 99% of us that hunt know it’s cheaper to buy a steak at Albertsons.
I had to explain that it’s our lifestyle that we chose to eat wild game, not really out of necessity.
Then I get a message from Poppa Joe, “Poppa Joe to the recuse! I can’t help you with the black bear or duck, but when you replace your freezers, call me.”
Poppa Joe, my family and I just wanna publicly thank you and Cinnamon Creek for your generosity. We are forever grateful. [emoji3590]
