    East Texas Protein?

Hunting on around 65-70ac in Van Zandt County. A lot of the neighbors north of us are feeding protein and food plots pretty much year round. Would it be worth it to feed protein on a place this size? if so, how many feeders? I would say that its probably 50/50 open vs wooded. Neighbors south don't hunt much, and ones east of me hunt some too. i have been talking to one of the neighbors quite a bit and he has 600ac. He does 3-4 corn feeders with one bag of protein mixed in and then does a protein feeder. He actually hunts his protein feeders in December. He said you would be suprised as to what shows up in mid to late December.

    Thoughts?

Don't bother mixing corn and protein in a spin feeder. You'll just clog it up.
If you really want to draw deer in, feed free choice protein. At the minimum a timed protein feeder. You'll be ahead of the game if area deer have a taste for the protein already.

Thanks….I will have to convert to me of my feeders to free choice.

Can you use your feeder with timer and just add the protein tube to it?

On the acreage we hunt, would one feeder be good?

Or possibly one of those gravity feeders you see at Walmart or maybe a pvc feeder?

Feed’em free choice protein 24-7-365 and they will come. No matter what size your place is.

I would get a 500-600lb. free choice and keep it full. Fence it so you're not feeding hogs. Make sure fence is good sized so deer will be comfortable jumping in. Mix corn/protein 50/50 ratio first two bags in. After that, you should be good. It may take a little time but soon they'll get addicted and know where the feed is.

I’ll look into that. I have a couple timed feeders. I might convert one into a protein feeder

I still have no luck with mine. Ive had an ASF timed protein feeder out since May. Did corn/protein and never had a single deer eat it. A number of pics of them walking by it. Thinking of putting a tube style out to see if that gets them started eating the protein and then maybe theyll go to the ASF

I hunt 30 acres in Harrison County. I've tried everything except protein. I just can't see putting out the expense for protein when someone across the fence will probably benefit when I'm not there. I live 4.5 hours away. I'm surrounded by deer leases and a cattle ranch that gets hunted. I try to let it grow up as a sanctuary but I still keep my fence rows mowed each year.

Good luck if you try it.

Good thing where I am is I live like 2mi from there. Several places feeding protein, not many hunt. I may not go all out with 5-600# feeders but I’m gonna try it. May build a trough to put it in.

One thing that truly helped us is not trying to saturate the entire place to 1 per 500 or 200 acres. Find out which feeders are being utilized the best because ur spring and summer patterns are gonna be different from the winter. When you find out which feeders are being used the most in spring put two feeders in the pen. When bucks are in batchelor herds the dominate deer controls the feeder and won’t allow the younger deer to eat. By having another source they can access feed as well. If not they will watch him eat and leave when he leaves.

                        Good luck.
