    Vortex Broad Head, any experiences?

Does anyone use the “new” American Archer Vortex broad head? Good or bad experiences? A cousin in law used Vortex heads back in the early to mid 90’s and he swore by them. I think they stopped making them for a while but I’ve recently seen them as an American Archer sponsor. They look like a well built and designed head, although I’m not too sure about what looks to be a 90 angle of the blade at the ferrule when deployed. They still use o-rings for blade retention which is my draw to them along with the cousin’s past experience. I’m not real confident in the rage shock collars, I’ve had them open in the quiver and yes, I made sure to mount them with the blades on the tabs. My arrows are 5mm FMJ’s and I’m thinking there’s not enough “shoulder” to secure it well. I use Montec G5’s and Slick Trick Mag’s fixed heads, I’m just trying to expand my broad head selection.

Didn’t know they were back in production. The original were devistating! I’m not a mechanical fan at all… it if I were going to shoot one it would be them

We call them “scissor heads”. I’ve seen them completely disembowel a mid west deer… slightly bigger than the goats here in Texas. Lol

Back in the 90’s it was the best mechanical around. Super wide cutting radius.

No experience but I just looked them up. Looks like a Shwacker w the blade geometry of an axe head. Looks like it would be devastating on soft tissue.

Never seen a issue with them. Been tempted to get some for old times sake

I think the originals were more like the blue ones, they come in 2", 2.5", and 2.75" ! I'm guessing aluminum ferules.

The American Archer model is 2" but advertised as "steel". It looks like the blade design would be more of a push through than a slice if that makes sense.

Tagged. Killed my first archery deer with the old school ones back in 2001. Would love to try them again.

I’ll say the deer I shot was less than ideal shot placement. Hit him high right behind the shoulder. Not a lot of penetration, but this was a used bow at the time so old school. He ran maybe 70 yards with enough blood to track, but not a brick road.
