    Aransas NWR 2021 Archery

Anyone else get drawn? My group got drawn, but it may end of being just me. It seems from past threads it can be a challenging hunt, but that there are big dear there.

Good to know. I’ve grown up on the coast, so I’m not to worried. I’ve fought my fair share of mosquitoes hunting duck on public land from Matagorda north

If you only knew. These things are relentless. It’s a tough hunt but there are a lot of deer and even more hogs.

          Mosquitos ticks chiggers

          Black clay

Wet as hell (We went after a hard rain)

          Some beautiful scenery though.

          Get there early.

When I went there was a ton of pressure. Some harder charging guys had gotten the spot we wanted because they got up earlier and staked their spot while we were farting around. There are some good spots. You really want to map it out and figure out what locations you want to target. My buddy I hunted with had us several spots mapped on google earth to check.

It was fun but we didn’t shoot anything

Lol but I do…that’s what I’m saying. I’ve duck hunted in the area during early teal.

I highly suggest you take some raid professional strength flying insect killer. Cover your clothes with it. Also a full head mesh. The skeeters are no exaggeration. They eat off and cutter like candy. And dont forget the snakes. Then there is the javelinas that know you cant shoot them and will chase you. Plus the wild hogs herds.
I did kill my first deer there ever with my old 45# recurve back in the 70's. And if you got to go pop a squat......take the raid!!!!!

I'll be out there for the first time too. Sounds like an adventure to me!

CAL, there are coastal mosquitoes, then there are ANWR skeeters. I went for a three day hunt in 1986, have never been back and my body itches thinking about that trip. All of my hunting buddies have been once, that’s all it took. Good luck and I hope you have success!!

We got drawn for this one also, will be 2 of us. First time hunting there but have hunted Laguna Atascosa a couple years ago. I assume this one will be similar as far as conditions, both on the coast. Used Permethrin on clothes and thermacell to deal with the insects which worked pretty well. Hopefully will work here also. Maybe we will see you there, good luck!

I hunted it quite a bit in High school. You could camp on the side of the road back then. Never have shot a good deer but they do have some decent ones there. I think I only hunted one year when it was dry. Hip boots are a must, most of the time you will be in ankle to knee deep water. I’m just not that dedicated anymore. Watch out for snakes. Try and find some high ground during the week as weekends will most likely have them all ready taken.

Good luck there are definitely opportunities there. I still like following threads on this place.
