    Bad day, yesterday

We went to Fredericksburg yesterday, to get peaches to eat and make peach wine. Found a really nice brewery, bar, restaurant, and tractor museum. Then found a distillery. Stopped at both, but did not want to do much sampling, because we had a good ways to drive, back home. We need to go back and spend a weekend up there.

We also ate lunch there in Fredericksburg, while eating lunch, I am sure I saw one of the game wardens from Lonestar Law, a couple tables over from us.

So on our way home, we get into Seguin, I saw red and blue lights flashing ahead of us, then lost them. Then saw a sheriff's deputy come up behind us with lights flashing, moving fast. He eventually got through traffic, going down 123 through Seguin, made a left turn down a side road, that can be used as a shortcut over to 90. We went all the way to 90, then we turned onto 90 to go home, then down the road, saw the same deputy ahead of us, moving fast. We lost sight of him quickly.

Then we get to 1117, and have a Mustang come up behind us moving fast, he went around me, as we came up to a car on fire, the fire department was spraying down the car, and the grass around the car, was on fire. The grass had just been cut the day before so, it had enough time to dry out, so it was on fire. Then there was a ambulance and at least a couple of deputies blocking the road. Did not make sense for a car fire, that caught the grass on fire. All of this was right around the Guadalupe River bridge. We had to turn around, and take a different route home.

We got home, chopped up peaches for the wine, ran them through a food processor, dumped the chopped up peaches in the container we start the wine in. Then cleaned up the mess and sat down to relax. My wife found the story of what was going on down the road, quickly. Turns out there were two kids in the water, that got in the current, that has drowned many over the years. I think it was their father that went and rescued them, but then he got pulled under. Then some woman tried to help him and she got pulled under. The two adults drowned. Then some family member who showed up at the scene, parked their car in the cut, dried out grass, and their car caught the grass on fire.

The first responders on that deal, had to have their hands full, not a fun job yesterday. The two people who drown, were from different families. So members of both families showed up afterwards.

That same spot, there have been many drownings over the years, usually at least two a summer. A lot of people, including us, like to go kayaking there, or use that as a place to get out of the river. There are a lot of people who like to go swimming there. We have been told by many people, that the current forms a whirlpool, that will suck you under, just down stream of the bridge. There is a sharp bend in the river, just down stream of the bridge. From what I have seen, there is sand bar in the middle of the river, then a fast drop off, on one side of the river. Very often, you will see whole families on that sand bar. On the side of the river, where the water is deep, the current is going to be strong and moving fast. At some point, it forms a whirlpool.

I know on our trips down the river, there are multiple sharp bends in the river. On those sharp bends, the water is flowing very strong and you can see whirlpools forming. Some of those whirlpools get pretty loud, I would guess they are very powerful, when they are that loud, would not want to find out.

When we have gone down the river, the water flow was a lot lower, than it has been in the past month. It has been much higher than normal, because of the rains. We have been planning to go kayaking, once the water flow gets back near normal.

Prayers up for the lost lives and for abundant peace, comfort , perseverance and healing for the families and that all of their needs to be met. Also for the first responders these things are horrible on them.

Was that between HWY 90 and Capote RD on 1117? There has always been people there fishing and swimming in the river. I’ll be going thru there next Friday heading towards my family.

        Prayers up the families.

I was scrolling thru FB (I know, I know) and a girl I know is somehow related (possibly the mother) to the female that drowned while helping save the kids. Terrible situation.

Dang! And that's why I don't swim in lakes and such. If the Lord wanted me to swim he'd have made me a fish.

Yes, where the Guadalupe crosses 1117. It's actually between 90 and 466 on 1117. Capote Rd. is farther out 1117, in the general area.

There is a Capote Rd. about a mile or so from 466.

I am thinking of Capote Oaks, it's a mile or two from 466.
Never heard 466 called Capote Rd., while looking for the Capote Rd I know of, I saw 466 listed as Capote Rd, also.
