    Hay field questions

I disk my hay fields last year several times. The then rolled with a heavy roller. Put out seed and rolled again. Happy with the seed germination.

I'm not satisfied with how some areas turned out being not as smooth as I wanted it to be.

My hay guy told me to disk again in the spring and roll trying to get it smoother.

I might be thinking to much. Would a tiller only tilling only a few inch's give me better results then roll. I would most likely disk a few times prior to tilling

My hay guy say the more you mess with bermuda the thicker it gets.

You will be better off disking it real good now, cross disc it so your really breaking it up. Then drag it with a good, heavy spike drag to help "smooth it out". Roll it if ya have a really good roller. I wouldnt wait til the spring.

Stan I made a drag with 2 cattle panels linked with quick links on the long side. I topped with old truck tires and RR cross ties. I pull it behind my disc to fix hog wallows. It works amazingly well. Until I hit a small tree stump. . I'll text a picture.

I disk mine then pull a drag diagonal across where I disk.
I built a drag out of I beam it works pretty good.

I modified this to have 2 truck tires between the RR ties.

We made a 12’ roller out of 20” pipe !
Welded hubs on both ends and filled with motor oil.
The thing weighed a ton and would smash land flatter than paper.
Costed us about $200 total. Wish I still had that thing, or at least the farm for that matter.

Some might be surprised how well cattle panels smooth a field out. I dont have tires on mine, but I do put 5 or 6 panels on top of one another and it does a great job after I disc. Not to mention theyre 16’ long so you cover a lot of ground quickly.

I built a 12 foot roller (see DYI section) and it weighs about 3000 lbs when full. It did flatten pretty good. But it did not smooth it out enough.
