    Hunting South Carolina..who’s been?

Who has been to South Carolina hunting deer, Turkey, ducks or bears? Did you do DIY or guide? Thinking of a trip for next October and looking for recommendations or advise! Thanks in advance

Following, as I have not. SC has one of the longest season's in the nation. Also downright beautiful place![emoji106]

I grew up in SC. Deer hunting has changed a ton there since I've moved(probably for the better). Where in SC are you thinking about hunting? The rut is typically an Oct-ish thing, but it's not up to the caliber of a TX rut. You can kill bucks in velvet in Aug to the first week of Sept or so(down in the Lowcountry) but that is hot, miserable weather.

You can have a good wood duck hunt anywhere in the state, and there are some private managed duck clubs that hold good ducks, but you probably won't sniff one of those places. Outside of that, the duck hunting is typically terrible.

Turkey hunting is on the decline...populations are slipping and the seasons are a little whacky now, but it can still be really good.

Bears can be had in the upstate(mountains).

There's a fair amount of public ground to play on, but pay to play operations aren't as near as plentiful as they are in Texas.

Some really good fishing options too between the Santee Cooper lakes or the coast.

Is that where they have the "red wolves"? If so, be careful shooting coyotes. I think that also might be where they have a lifetime hunting license giveaway if you shoot the right coyote so... maybe worth the risk.

Very, very, very few of those red wolves in the wild. And I think most of them are on an island.

Curious why anyone from TX would want to hunt SC?

SC is not known for big deer(and TX is). I'm an hour away from SC and I don't bother to hunt there.

BTW, there are a lot of bears in North Georgia and a lot of public land, both WMA and national forest.

You’d be surprised how many 130-140” deer are killed in SC these days. Most people, even in TX, are more than pleased with that sized deer.

But you’re right, SC isn’t known as a big buck state. But the management is nothing like it is in Texas either.

I’d bother hunting there because my son is stationed there with Navy for next 2.5 years and I like to get out in the woods with him and Texas is not an option. Size is less important to me than time in the woods with my boy.
