Believe it or not, my oldest Walt Lee (almost 6) enjoys the morning hunts more than afternoon hunts. Trying to bring a success story to 2020 and we’ve been determined.
We have been selective in our targets for his first deer and have them narrowed down to three different cull bucks and only super mature does. Having sat around 10 times this season before this weekend and have yet to cross paths with one of the “cull shooters/does”.
We’ve practiced with the rifleman times, talked heavily about shot placement, review over and over and over again while in the stand and at home.
Now we wait. And wait. And wait some more...
I want it to come together so badly for him and for it to be a successful first experience.
I want the boys to learn patience. In turn, I’m the one having to sharpen my patience in every aspect of the hunting game and fatherhood.
I want them to never take lightly taking an animal’s life regardless of species or game.
We could have killed already but what is the lessons in that, for them or myself.
We hunted hard since starting on the Friday evening hunt.
This morning’s hunt was an uneventful sit, so we pack up to head back to camp. As soon as we stepped out of the blind, bumped two bucks.
Not going to lie, I was a bit frustrated because we normally sit until 9am or so. With no action all morning, I called it at 8:28am and I guess the deer were moving late.
Decided to do some things around camp and wait for the boys to wake up from a nap to decided if we would give it a go for the evening hunt.
Walt woke up and decided he wanted to go hunt but only if his Mom would join us. That was an extra treat because Kelsey normally holds down camp with Weston and GiGi.
The evening happened fast, we got settled in and 5 min before feeder went off a big mature doe came in alone. She stayed just out of shot view from us. Feeder went off and she eased in along with a couple other deer.
After a little time she presented the right angle and timing however the other deer busted us moving around getting Walt settled in the rifle.
I hit record on the cameras, Walt settled in, and then the biggest doe locked in on us as well but standing broadside.
Walt squeezes off a .223 round and it hits it mark. The big doe ran about 30 yards and tipped over. Let’s just say this Dad was more shook up than Walt [emoji38], he was cool as a cucumber.
We headed to camp to bring the whole crew to do the “track job”.
A hunt and an evening we will never forget.
What a blessing our wonderful deer lease is!
We are lucky that we are able to raise these boys in the woods and on the water like we were raised. Nothing like seeing God’s handywork up close and enjoying it with family.
