    Never fired M77

I’ve been looking to get a M77 for a little while now. I now have the chance to buy a 1981 tang safety 30-06 that has never been fired. I tried to work a deal out with the owner to shoot the gun with my cash in hand to see how it groups first. He will not budge and refuses to shoot it. I’ve read accuracy on the older models is hit or miss. Those of you that have more experience with M77s, would you buy this or look for a Hawkeye?

Absolutely wait look for a Hawkeye. I owned an early 80's M77 30.06 and my current Hawkeye 30.06 is a much better rifle.

It should be plenty accurate enough buy it if the price is right

Depends on your definition of accurate. If you want 1/4 inch groups I’d pass. If you are looking for MOA I would say buy it if that’s the gun you are after.

I don’t blame the owner for not wanting to shoot it. If I was in his position I wouldn’t shoot it for a test drive.

I wouldn't budge either if I was him, you can go pound sand if you think I am going to let you take the virgin shots on my 39 year old rifle kill the value and then not buy it from me when you don't like it.

No help on if it will be accurate or not but I would guess it is probably going to be good enough for a hunting gun. But probably not as good as the more modern stuff on the market these days.

I got one in the classifieds that you can test shoot all you need. 300 win mag is better than 3006. I have both. By the way, how do you know it was never shot?

I never owned a tang safety. But I have a couple mk2s and a Hawkeye. I love the trigger on the Hawkeye. But they all shoot well. I don’t think I could pass an opportunity at a tang safety.

Do they let you try out a new gun at a gun store to see if you like the accuracy? I wouldn’t budge one bit

I have a 243 about the same vintage, and me and that gun just click. It’s very accurate and makes me look good some times.

Mf fathers tang safety 3006 in the ultra light platform surprisingly shoots well. I’m not a range guy but I want to hit what I aim for. That little gun has never let me down.

If you get a 30-06...plan on keeping it... I sold an early 308 flatbolt recently... It may have been shot once... I think I sold it too cheap...

I had a 1983 30-06 M77 that shot great BUT it kicked like a freakin mule and I'm not one to complain about recoil ever but it was just different.. I own 30-06's at the moment. None kick like it did..
All that being said I would jump on it if the price was right and I can completely understand him not wanting to shoot it if it is unfired..
