I've tried a wide variety of hog baits including hog wild, corn, soured corn, several other corn additives, and even raspberry lemonade packets mixed with corn. Hogs will eat anything so there is no doubt they all work to an extent, but this homemade wild hog bait attractant recipe I found works very well.
We have hogs that pass through our property every couple weeks or so but they don't stay long. We went to walmart and followed that recipe closely and as soon as we mixed it all together I could just tell it was going to work. It had a really strong scent from the anise oil and then the intensely sweet flavoring just added to it. I put the stuff out on monday and hunted monday night, didn't see anything. I went home. I imagine it was because hogs weren't around.
So then I came back today and as soon as I pulled in I saw hogs in our pastures and the neighbor told me he's seen hogs hanging out in the pasture where I put the bait just about every day this week since I left. The area where I put the bait is all rooted up and I even hung some in a plastic bag from a tree about 5 ft off the ground and the bag was tore apart and the ground underneath it was all rooted up.
This homemade recipe really works. Now I wonder if it'll work for deer or other animals? I guess probably not if hogs are in the area.
