    Dual Sport Guys

Looking to upgrade from my XT250. Going to give it to my wife. I want a bit more power for the street and bit better suspension off road. What bikes should I look at? Long maintenance intervals are a huge plus so lean toward street bike based motors not MX. Won’t be racing or jumping etc. Really just need a second bike and want a bit more power while I’m buying. I’m a fairly short guy so sticking to major brands with lowering parts available.

I guess you aren't interested in the KTM 500 exc you asked about for your brother?

I might be for sure if he isn’t just let me know the price. Three of us looking for bikes in the next few months.

Yeah, you really can't beat the KLR for the money, but if money is not a concern, I have ridden a Honda African Twin and that thing is awesome, a big difference between the the two.
I just made my CRF450RX street legal for dual sport. It was very simple to add the light kit, get it inspected, and changed the title to have "off road only" removed. But I still enjoy MX.
Let us know what you end up going with and where you intend to ride.
We do! a CO Gunnison area ride in Aug every year and it's a blast!

Even the forest service roads are getting fairly technical or I am getting too old.

I would look at FI first, I hate having to change jets when going into the mountains. Second is weight on the road - extra weight will keep you from having a heart attack when meeting a semi at 75mph but sucks if you are like me and need to pick the bike up a few times a day when going off road. If you are going to be at the same elevation all the time carbureted bikes are cheaper.

KLR650 if you are not going to do much in the way of off road.
DR650 if you are going to be off road more

if you are willing to pop for FI

ktm 500 exc best off-road with power. Only 240 lbs dry so easy to pick up but might make you pucker meeting a semi. Short service interval

ktm 690 - enduro heavier at 325 lbs still capable for all but hairy single tracks. Cush hub to smooth out those gear changes. Not inexpensive at all. Long service interval

Yes. Very similar. A lot of parts are interchangeable but has different plastics styling and seat.
