    Bahia Grande

I was lucky to get drawn on the second draw (Feb 5-7). I guess we will all be veterans after this hunt. Unlike the Atascosa, I have no idea where to start. Are we going to be able to drive down the road or will it be bike access only? It is a pretty big area to tackle with a bike and with only 3 days to hunt it.

I'll be there Feb 5-7 too. A ranger has said the unit has never before been hunted and is "infested" with Nilgai. He also said due to the lack of any hunting there, and perhaps its proximity to town, the Nilgai are supposedly "less skittish" than in the Atascosa area. Still, if we can't drive the almost 9-mile access road from the entrance on 48, that's going to be an exceptionally tough hunt as we will simply push all of the animals north as we all enter together. Also, I don't see any parking at the 100 end and the first mile and a half of the dirt road ("Pennsylvania Ave - Woods Side" on the map) is in the no-hunt zone.

It is far from clear to me how we are even supposed to access the upper western section of the BG unit. It appears that there is a path (footpath? dirt track?) but there is no parking at the road end of that path either, and that part of the unit is separated from the rest (and the main entrance gate on 48) by water.

Spoke to the park service. We will be allowed to drive in there but will need to stay on the main road. The only entrance and exit will be through highway 48. That is not bad. Some areas in the Atascosa are farther.

Thanks for doing the asking, RGV Hunter. Not bad at all. In fact, the farthest you can walk from the main access road and still be in the hunt area is 2.2 miles by my figuring, unless you want to hunt the western segment. The closest we'll be able to park a truck to that western segment area is about a 3 mile hike, and that's just to get to the beginning of the hunting zone. You can still walk another 3.5 miles or so from there. So if you are the hard-core type who really feels the need to hunt that side, and don't mind a 3 to 6.5 mile walk or bike ride across rattlesnake infested sand back to your truck in the darkness, that western segment is for you!

Keep in mind, that we only have 3 days for this hunt. I would recommend picking a spot and hunting it. We will not have much time to explore. It will be in February so it will be cold for Rio Grande Valley standards. At least you should be able to carry the meat for a bit without having to worry about spoilage.

I have a hunt in next week at the Atascosa and it may be hot so anything that is killed will need to be taken out pretty quick like I would say. At least that has been my experience when I get drawn on the early hunts.

Totally agree. Look at the area on Google Earth -- there's no shortage of potentially promising spots to pick.

What temp is "cold" for down there?

On an extremely cold day maybe 40 degrees but mostly in the 60s for a few days. Not that it has never snowed here but don't hold your breath.
I think February is probably the coldest month of the year.

Did you get clarity on leaving the car in the unit while hunting? I was under the impression that you could drive in to drop off and pick up, but had to park near the entrance otherwise.

They said we could drive up to the turn around but I don't know where that is.
