We started enforcing people riding on the back decks two years ago. Young lady lost her life on an area lake. She suffered the same as this young boy. The back decks or “lay out” decks on these surf boats are bad. I would be guessing but I would say they were surfing. Lots of weight, slow speed, lots of exhaust because of the throttle. Sad but most people don’t know about it. Offshore trolling I’ve never even heard of a single case.

It’s was a inboard, not an inboard - outboard (I/O)
& I agree, I think something was wrong with the boat. Those old true inboards are hard to surf behind, so most people don’t do that on them. When you are going idle sped the exhaust is in the water & if you are going slow & sitting in the backseat you should be far enough away & moving to keep the exhaust away.

So sad
As much as it pains me to say this we need more regulation on the exhaust now that wakesurfing has become so popular.
My boat is a 2014 axis and came at a hefty price tag yet still even I cant surf for very long without noticing the exhaust smell and even getting headaches now and then.
Older boats need some kind of emission test if they are going to be surfing behind it period.
