Kid dies in boat from exhaust

Sad deal , something I never thought about when trolling offshore Or skiing
Cassandra Free, who was a Kerrville resident and a coach at Tivy High School, is living in Broken Arrow, Okla., now. And her family recently suffered one of the worst

With these storms y’all be careful of the generator
And it’s probably about time to test the home furnaces or carbon monoxide alarms
At home and ranches for the winter

Man, I would call the exhaust odorless...I get a headache if I have to stand much of it.

Awful. I never would have thought about this being in the open air.

There was a 20/20 or a show similar about that many years ago.
          Terrible things like that happen

We started enforcing people riding on the back decks two years ago. Young lady lost her life on an area lake. She suffered the same as this young boy. The back decks or “lay out” decks on these surf boats are bad. I would be guessing but I would say they were surfing. Lots of weight, slow speed, lots of exhaust because of the throttle. Sad but most people don’t know about it. Offshore trolling I’ve never even heard of a single case.

It says in the article it was a Malibu Skier which is an older boat that lacks the Vdrive and large rear deck. My guess is there was a mechanical failure with the exhaust and the boat was leaking CO at the motor . If the kid rode in the rear of the boat in the same spot all day, I could see how it could kill him. You are are correct that no one should be sitting on the rear deck when the motor is running. Austin police used to pull people over for it on Lake Austin.

Sad deal for sure, my wife was telling me about this the other day. My first thought was some sort of exhaust leak, too.

I thought all the exhaust went out the center of the prop. Trolled many hours with an I/O and never had a problem.

It’s was a inboard, not an inboard - outboard (I/O)

& I agree, I think something was wrong with the boat. Those old true inboards are hard to surf behind, so most people don’t do that on them. When you are going idle sped the exhaust is in the water & if you are going slow & sitting in the backseat you should be far enough away & moving to keep the exhaust away.

As much as it pains me to say this we need more regulation on the exhaust now that wakesurfing has become so popular.
My boat is a 2014 axis and came at a hefty price tag yet still even I cant surf for very long without noticing the exhaust smell and even getting headaches now and then.
Older boats need some kind of emission test if they are going to be surfing behind it period.

King. They make an aftermarket that puts the exhaust deeper. But I’d think it would hit bottom and they are not cheap. They gotta do something with the surf boats as it is not an uncommon event.
