    Driveway car break ins/petty theft

So my buddy has a problem. His cars are getting broken into routinely. Someone is opening unlocked doors and stealing what they can find, loose change etc. It's more aggravating than anything and likely kids. I suggested a ring floodlight but they are almost $300 plus a monthly fee. I would personally spend it to catch them, get the police involved and scare them straight before they progress to grand theft. He could also spend a couple of hundred dollars on each car for an alarm, but again, they aren't leaving anything in their cars so not really worth it (and his cars are not worth stealing).

So I'm looking for creative ideas to scare the heck out of them and perhaps wake the neighborhood. What about battery powered loud entry alarms? You can get (4) 120 dB ones from Amazon for $25. Other ideas? Don't want to kill them, just help them see the errors of their ways. What have you guys done?

    Thanks

Just to be clear, the cars are being left unlocked?

Have the same issue in our neighborhood. I’ve never had a problem though because I take the simple step of locking my doors. It’s amazing in today’s world how many people don’t hit the lock button on their cars.

I wouldn't count on the cops catching anyone from video unless it's little Johnny next door. I've got HD video of people stealing thousands of dollars worth of stuff and it didn't help. Also wouldn't install an alarm that will wake the neighborhood.

Probably just lock the doors. I do feel the pain though. My last truck was broken into multiple times. I think I was most irritated when someone pulled a case of water out of the bed, took two, and left it sitting on the driveway.

Ive lived out in the country most of my adult life. A yr ago I moved into a subdivision and have to remind myself to lock my doors. I still occasionally forget.

Locking the vehicle doors will stop a lot of it. Obviously, there are numerous exceptions to this; especially if valuables are left visible in the vehicle. However, it will stop the random people just looking for unlocked vehicles. You would be surprised how much of this happens in even nice neighborhoods.

With that said, if at all possible, park in the garage. I hate that my garage doesn't have much storage or work space as my wife is insistent in us parking in the garage. However, on the flip side, it's great peace of mind at night and during inclement weather.
