    Which youth model?

I’m looking to buy my 7 year old his first “big” gun I’m leaning towards .223. I’m needing a left handed bolt gun, Small enough for him to handle. Any suggestions for which models I should be looking at? Thanks

Ruger American....got 2 in 6.5CM. Just looked at their Compact .223 at Scheels and almost walked out the door with it.

Why not get him an AR that can grow with him? Then when he is older and grown about as much as he is going to get him a normal gun. My daughter will be using my 300blk AR this year. Just a thought.

          This is what you seek.

I have my 7 and 9 year old grandsons shooting my AR-15 in 6.8 SPC with the adjustable padded butt-stock. As they grow, the stock will adjust out longer. The 7 year old is shooting it off a caldweld dead shot field pod with the stock collapsed all the way in. The 9 year old is in the first notch out from minimum on the fieldpod. Both shoot it very well. They practice with the .223, but hunt with the 6.8. In a hunting scenario, they never know the difference in recoil between the two. I was afraid the 6.8 might cause them to develop a flinching habit. So far, it's worked out very well. Chance are a 7-9 year old won't be working the bolt on a bolt gun anyway as someone will always be with them (at least that is the case for my boys)...

Thanks for all the input! My wife has a cut down .243 from when she was a kid, his first shot is always good and after that he’s flinching. As for the AR I’m just trying to keep it a little traditional for his first hunting rifle. I will look at the rugers thanks!

Howa Mini in either 6.5 grendel or 7.62x39. Spend extra get the chassis 1. Adds weight less recoil and 2. It’s adjustable. It will be a forever gun. Put on a brake and have cheap but effective fun.

I felt the same way about an AR. It makes sense to use it as a youth gun but wasn’t traditional enough for me.

I have a youth savage axis 223 and ruger american compact 243 and would recommend both.

Also, one of my kids is a lefty and they have had no problem shooting a right handed rifle.

Coming from a another lefty that has 2 lefty kids the Remington Left Hand Youth should fit the bill. They have from 223 up to 308 if I am not mistaken. The new savage's that have the accufit stock are also a great gun. I have one of each. With the accustock you adjust the length of pull when they get bigger and you still have a compact gun.

Get a suppressor. Lots of kids flinch from the muzzle blast more than the recoil. A suppressor will cut recoil and muzzle blast dramatically. Thread moms 243 and put the can on it.

I started my oldest with a 223 in an AR platform about 7 years ago. I’m going with a 300 BO with my youngest now. It seems to be a harder hitting round than the 223 and most of their shots are within 75 yards. Recoil is very light on this gun with the suppressor on it. This is a Ruger American Ranch. Works great!

Don’t mind the makeup, she got into mommy’s makeup when I was setting up to shoot.

Best solution. I cut the stock down on my kids rifles and used lighter loads
The kids learned quickly on the .22’s. Daughter still shoots her lefty savage .243 with full loads

Last Christmas Santa brought my 9 year old a Ruger American in 7mm-08 with the muzzle brake. He also brought the Hornady reduced recoil ammo. First time out she was nailing the bullseye at 100 yds. It's a very easy shooting gun, and it can grow as she grows with full power ammo.
