    Old fishing reel help

Mrs recently scored an old Garcia Abumatic 290 at an estate sale for me. It’s pretty neat.

I’d like to clean it up and put it back into service.

Tips? Tricks? Things to look out for?

Do any of y’all fix up old reels, and where are any good resources for fixing them?

Place near downtown Dallas that may or may not have parts since it's and Abu G. And can do cleaning.

Thanks, I need a part for an old 5000 and have had a problem finding one.

I drive by that place pretty often

It’s near Mockingbird and Irving Blvd.

        Never been inside

I’ll have to check it out.

        Thanks for the tip!

Not much to them. If you can work on a spinning reel you can work on that one. Plastic parts can dry rot and are difficult to find. I think the spring on the line release might be the worst thing you will have to feel with.

            Thanks!

I’ve taken the top end apart. Didn’t even need any tools to do so. It’s a very simple and clever design so far.

I’ll get into the rest of it one evening this week. I was planning to monkey with it today, but our refrigerator pooped out last night, and it was a mad dash to find a new one, and move all our food over. Made for a hectic day.

I learned to fish on one like that and the red ones too. They are simple to take apart and clean and lube.
