    Colorado Vaction in two weeks

For the most part we are winging it but planning on Durango Co. being our first stop. next Gunnison then Colorado Springs. Spending a few days tenting at each. I've been doing a bunch of research but would love to hear from everyone.
We plan on staying at Camp grounds, State parks ect. Recommendations would be great.
Activities we are planning are Zip line, whitewater rafting, fishing. Just didn't figure out where yet.
    Thanks for the help

The Cog train up Pikes Peak (If running still with Corona) Is a fun trip up. There is a point were they let you off to hike some and catch the next train up and back down. I also suggest a stop anywhere near cripple creak. Neat mining town. Lots of trails surrounding as well to hike or offroad. Manitou Springs has a few great places to eat right outside of Colorado Springs.

Fishing it sounds like you will be near the Animas, San Juan, and Gunnison rivers, all great fisheries.

Part of our family went rafting on the Arkansas out of Buena Vista.

It’s not running. But Royal Gorge is open and fully operational

You'll need reservations for camping at state parks I believe.
Colorado is covered in campers and hikers right now, and tons are coming up to Wyoming. You'll find lots of folks out and very little solitude.
Rivers are getting low so fishing may be good then, rafting may be not so good if water continues to drop. Check with the local guides.

Have fun, watch the weather as afternoon thunderstorms bring lightening. Lots of fire restrictions right now too, please obey them. It is dry across the west. Bring on the monsoons.

Check out the Black Canyon's they are pretty cool and they have camping also.

Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky.

Super dry there right now so rivers are fairly low, fishing was great last week though.

By far the most people I've ever seen in CO. Campgrounds that typically are FCFS are reservation only and they are booked all summer long. Trailheads over flowing as well.
I'm sure there are areas to get away from people though.

Gunnison. You can hire the pilots at the local airport to fly you over the area. I highly recommend this. Lots of hippies in town just FYI. There are several really good restaurants and bars.

Shoot me a PM, and I will give you a fantastic Jeep/4wd trail south of town. Not putting it on here because it's the trailhead we hunt from. But it's a fantastic ride up, steep grades, lots of small trout, and a real nice rancher up at the top. I take my F250 and pop up camper up it, but no chance anything bigger would make it up. It's one way in, surrounded by wilderness, so you have a better chance of seeing elk than fourwheelers.

Kids or no kids? That’ll make a difference in recommendations.

I went as a kid and do not remember being scared at all. About half way crossing this time and I felt some vertigo looking down. Our whole clan made it across and took the gondola back

I have nothing for you, just wanted to comment and say I'll be in Colorado in 2 weeks as well. Group of jeep guys driving up and camping at the KOA in Ouray.

I would second that the "just winging it" part is your biggest challenge. Things are not normal right now, as we all know, and people are getting out much more than normal. I would do my best to get reservations in the areas that you're trying to stay.
I've slept in my truck plenty of times, but not with the wife and kiddos.

Independent Whitewater outfitters for rafting the Arkansas in the Salida/Buenavista CO. area. A few years ago we took a family rafting trip with my 2 sons, daughter inlaw, teenage grand daughter and myself. A full day trip. What a blast and a workout. Full day trip. Missed the peak snow melt by about a week late, we went on I think July 17. We put in town and took out before the Royal Gorge. Just awesome !!!!!!!! ........cC

We did a similar trip 2 years ago. We had planned to take the Durango/Silverton train but that was shut down due to a fire. The Ore House in Durango serves a good steak. We drove up to Ouray and stayed 3 nights there and rented a jeep. Lots of good offroad trails. The Ouray Hot Springs is real nice. We spent our evenings there relaxing and letting the kids swim. North of Ouray there is a road I highly recommend called Last Dollar Rd. that is scenic and no traffic. When I drove it I did not need 4x4 but I can see where you might need it if it is muddy. Don't miss Black Canyon, it is a must see. We also enjoyed the Royal Gorge. If you go to Royal Gorge there is a short road outside of Canon City called Skyline Drive that's worth taking (its one way and comes out in Canon City).
That's all I can think of right now.
