Cowboys and Indians - end of an era

Just heard the NFL is retiring the Redskins Name and Logo and Washington will be working up new branding.

Maybe they should go with "The Millennial's"

One more reason not to watch.

All of the replacement names I saw mentioned are either also offensive now, or will be in a few years.

ridiculous that people get all worked up over a name. The name's been there forever and no one's had a problem until now and when Obama was in office.
I wonder what Native American indians think about it all? I heard Snyder was getting out.

I don't get it...the names were chosen as a signal of strength. Just like a lot of our military weapons.

No," redskins" is not a signal of strength.
Any native american will tell you it's offensive and racial.
Take a drive up to a reservation and ask some folks how they feel about getting called redskins.
I know many native americans and the name is not flattering or a symbol or strength.

Sometimes we just need to do the right thing and not whine about it.

My cousin is half. His wife is full. Kids 3/4. He isn't offended.

Cracker Barrel needs to change their name. It upset me to no end. Not their name but their food. It is terrible. Neat atmosphere fun table game, but bad food.

Welp I grew up a fan of the redskins and if this is true that's it for me. I've already been a fair weather fan for the last few years.

Yep. Having a racial team name for years doesn’t make it right.

No matter what they call themselves.......
                        I still won't like them.

                          Guess times change.

The Redskins primary logo used today was first designed in 1971 in close consultation with Native American leaders. Among those who unanimously approved and voiced praise for the logo was Walter “Blackie” Wetzel, a former President of the National Congress of American Indians and Chairman of the Blackfeet Nation. Years earlier, Mr. Wetzel had been deeply involved with U.S. President John F. Kennedy in the movement for civil liberties, civil rights, and economic freedom for all. In 2014, Mr. Wetzel’s son Don commented, “It needs to be said that an Indian from the State of Montana created the Redskins logo, and did it the right way. It represents the Red Nation, and it’s something to be proud of.”

Every Native American I've ever talked to has not been offended by the team name. I hate to stereotype, but I feel it's a big majority of the left being in other people's business. Ultimately, I think they're trying to be helpful, but they've never walked in their shoes before. They don't know what it's like to be Native American, they just hear things and from the outside looking only at the surface, say, "Jee, let me be offended for you."

Granted, I will agree the "redskin" is a racial and derogatory remark. You couldn't start up a new team and name them the Redskins...wouldn't happen. Maybe that's the test to see if it's deemed racist. Could you start a team today and name them that? I think you could start up a new team and call them the indians and the braves...

What I don't get is how these mascots, in my mind, were named/created to honor someone, something, or a group. Look at the Atlanta Braves... "Brave" has a positive connotation and I have always assumed they were so honored at the warriors who went to battle that they honored them by naming a team after them. To me, it's a sign of respect.

Perhaps in the era of the creation of the Redskins, the marketing team at the time figured this was an honorable way have a mascot that would be "feared" to play against. I don't know. It just doesn't work in today's climate.

On a personal level, I can see the reasoning to make a change, but I really like honoring the past and not changing things up. However, I haven't seen a good reason to keep it the way it is.

its a bunch of white people trying to tell us how the indians feel with a few young woke natives involved im sure. it original had the blessings on the indians as posted above. i wish Snyder would just close shop and walk away, let the team fold and let's see how that positively affects anyone involved with the organization. the people whining aren't even the ones that watch/support the game. it's ridiculous
