    Yellowstone via Billings Montana questions

Now we might be doing Yellowstone at the end of July instead of Idaho. So that being said what is the drive like from Billings ? Also tips on where to start looking for a place in Yellowstone ? Short lil get away. Fly in on a Thursday early and fly out late on Sunday.

Reading some other post we might look into Teton instead

I would fly into Bozeman if I were you, unless you are hell bent on seeing Billings. Bozeman is a lot closer to both Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.

No help on which part of Yellowstone is better, but I have had folks say they would go to Grand Teton multiple times, but said they didn't need to see Yellowstone again.

Red Lodge is a great little town to spend several hrs in if you pass through during your trip.

You'll be coming into Yellowstone at THE BEST entrance into the park; The Northeast Entrance. The Beartooth Highway is one of the most scenic highways in North America. I would skip Grand Tetons and do them when you have more time. Jackson Hole is a neat Tourist town, but is "Too" touristy. For the amount of time you'll be there, focus on a couple areas of the park and dive in. Yellowstone has several ecosystems and each are very different. If you try to see it all in 2 days, you'll miss the forest for the trees. The Lamar Valley, where you'll enter is one of the premier wildlife viewing roads so bring binoculars and a good camera.

Billings is one of those places you pass by but don't actually go there. lol
The drive from Billings to Bozeman is not a real scenic stretch so just a point A to point B
          kind of situation.

We went two years ago and flew into Billings. We drove from Billings to west Yellowstone the first night in the N entrance and out the W entrance. Next morning back in the west and out the south. Spent 3 nights in Jackson. Then in the S and out the E for a day in Cody. Then back to Billings. Headed back in September. Flying in and out of Jackson this time.

I lived just south of Billings in Laurel for awhile and it's not a bad drive at all. Laurel to Red Lodge is pretty uneventful because it's pretty much a big, long valley with lots of alfalfa fields and a few poker rooms scattered along the way. Red Lodge Pizza Co. and Mas Taco are decent and the Snow Creek Saloon is good for a quick drink. From Red Lodge down 212 is the Beartooth Highway into the Northeast entrance of the park and it's one of the most beautiful drives I've ever taken. Beartooth Pass is close to 11,000' elevation if I remember correctly.

The Tetons are nice but if it were me, I'd skip it and do Yellowstone instead. Like Sackett said, for the amount of time you'll be there, focus on a couple areas of the park and dive in.

United has 1 non-stop to Bozeman each day from Houston and it was $270 round-trip 2 weeks ago (I looked for a quick trip with my wife) its higher now.

Keep in mind it doesn't get dark up there until 11-1130 and there is no ac in most all the places to stay. When we were there 2 summers ago in July, it was fairly warm and even a fan in the window didn't help much until 3-4 in the morning.

I've stayed at a few of these and always had a good time....
Nine lodgings and accommodations in Yellowstone National Park for those wishing to experience the park in its summertime glory.

Your boy would like the Old Faithful Inn.

Disregard.... I just saw where it's closed for the year.

Looks like we will fly into Jackson hole Thursday at 1130. Stay the night and fly fish Friday then head north to Yellowstone Friday night till Sunday am then head back to Jackson hole and fly out that afternoon.

Enjoy! If you’re planning W Yellowstone, fly into Bozeman. You can fish the Madison driving there- Beartrap Canyon on Norris Road is great fishing and you’ll probably see bald eagles. Stop for dinner at the MacAllister Inn for ‘almost as good as Texas’ steaks.

I think that Flat Creek should be open north of Jackson when you are there. It is a really cool place to flyfish. It is a spring creek with some big undercut banks and big fish. Key is to sneak up to it and keep a low profile.

Just checked and Flat Creek doesn't open until August 1st.
