    Exotic animal question

I was reading up on exotics than can be kept on a low fenced property. It seem like the Addax would be the least damaging to a small property and possible the easiest to keep. The article said they get the majority of their water from the vegetation and grasses they eat.
What has been yalls experiences with placing exotics on a small parcel of land? Say 15-20 acres? I know Tony said he had a dozen blackbuck on his six acres. How badly do they affect the resident white tail population? I really don’t know all the questions to ask y’all.
I did read that 4.5 ‘ net wire with tied knots was the minimum you needed to keep black buck and Addax in.
What is the buck to doe ratio you would use? Asking for me and anyone else interested in putting exotics on a small property.
What can you expect to pay per animal? Where can you buy animals in Kerr county?

Our neighboring property had a herd of Addax and blackbuck and none got out of a good 5' net fence. They were always pretty docile and never seemed to bother the deer population. I'm sure that on a small property you'd have to keep the populations in check over time.

Can't help with cost or where to locate, but I do know a guy that could probably help you on that if you're serious about buying and stocking some. Hope this helps.

It did and thank you. That is what the article said as well that they were docile, both addax and black buck and made really good eye candy for a place. They encouraged folks to the the animals in the front pasture for more enjoyment. I’d be afraid of road hunters taking them before we were able to move onto the property though.

Also have to keep the yote and wild dog population in check (if that is a concern) The article said they get the majority of their water from the vegetation and grasses they eat.

Thanks 150. My friend Tony Pic has a buddy that raises exotics. I’m gonna text him and asked him to chime in here. Maybe it will help others with the same questions.

Everyone is pretty accurate, not much competition b/w blackbuck and WTD. I would only have 1 buck on a smaller place since they run harems like elk. One would eventually get killed and would probably be your best one that gets it if you had two males.

I'd say any county that touches Kerr would be a hotspot to find pretty much any exotic. Exotic ranches are thick in that area.

            No info on addax

I can't help you with the rest but you can buy anything at Raz's in Harper.

Bruce...the Blackbuck fight and kill each other. Herbie across the road had a few die that way fighting for dominance. Males get split up in different pens and sold off. I have them for an AG exemption on empty land and they are helping. The Whitetail come and go, as do the Axis and Muntjac and Wallaby of my neighbors. The Wallaby get a pass(they are my friends pets), the Cervids and occasional hog do not.
Raz is where we have bought most of our exotics. Addax are NOT cheap. BlackBuck give the best bang for the buck as far as raising exotics go IMO. Axis jump fences Blackbuck are small, don't eat much and make great trophies in 3-4 years. I am doing it for the AG exemption, not for profit at this point in time.

Up in between Robert Lee and Water Valley at my friends place, I've watched blackbuck several times, jump the 5 strand, feed in the open winter wheat pastures and leisurely jump back across and carry on their way. I would not think of putting black buck in a low fence unless I was prepared to lose them.

I put 4 blackbuck on my 122ac place in March of 2019 (1 ram and 3 ewes). I now have 9 blackbucks on my 122ac (3 rams and 6 ewes). They don’t seem to bother the whitetail any. I have a regular net wire fence(maybe 4’???). I guess I’m gonna have to trap some at some point.

                        Check out the
Texas Exotic Hoofstock Reloaded page of Facebook.

Always tons of stuff for sale in the hill country. Some of the animals are wild trapped and some are bottle raised.
BB stock are around 250F/4-500 male. Bigger bucks are a lot more.

Thanks for all the input so far folks. So if black buck multiply that fast you either shoot them, or sell em. That means a person would have to either own the trapping set up or hire someone to trap and transport when they are sold.
What do blackbuck sell for each! Addax?
Another question how do you keep em from cross breeding and coming out with unicorns!

That is right Bruce. We have the remote drop nets, the dart gun, access to land where we can trap free range Axis. We also have the prescriptions for dart drugs and all permits. We have never raised Addax but if you want to shoot one they are upwards of 7-8K. So you can anticipate the kids to be expensive. Especially after the USFWS shannigans that went on with them. Then after you dart them , you have to wait a good 90 days for the drugs to be out of their system for human consumption of the darted critter. Not such a cut and dry thing. I am still learning. We lost a few critters due to them getting stressed by darting for transport. Expensive lesson.

Get the land first Bruce. This thread is the kart before the horse. An AG exemption takes 5 years to obtain. Daylight is burning and the clock is ticking.
What the heck at you waiting for?

Working towards it bro. Going back Friday. Read some of the comments on the lay off thread. People are pulling back, holding off, cancelling vacations etc etc. if we bought property and my Nurse lost her job (which is happening now in College Station) we would be up a creek. Just trying to make the most stable decision I can on what appears to be unstable ground! You and every other responsible husband/ father would/ have done that or tried to. Our Realtor up there in K ville said things are not where they usually are this time of year. Folks are being cautious.
