    Wife likes her Mossberg 510

I would not say it's a high quality gun, so far it works, but not the smoothest functioning gun. The action is a bit stiff, same with the safety. Knowing it's supposed to be a kids gun, they should have made it function smoother, with less effort. But it functions and fires, it's very short and light. So far, no malfunctions. I am hoping with time it will get easier to cycle the action. My wife likes it, it fits her much better than any other long gun, rifle or shotgun I have tried to get her to shoot. It is very light. She did not mind the recoil, with common 7 1/2 shot 20 ga. loads. It did leave a light bruise, but she had been holding only the bottom end of the recoil pad on her shoulder, so all of the energy was getting transferred through a small area. The next day, when she found the bruise, I pointed out what she was doing wrong when she was shooting. I tried to point it out when she was shooting, but she kept going back and doing the same thing over again. Instead of putting the stock solid on her shoulder, and lowering her head to look down the top of the gun. She was raising the whole gun up to where she could see down the top of the gun.

She definitely likes the little gun, she likes it so much, she was going to try and kill a squirrel with it yesterday. Normally when she is home and sees a squirrel, she just tells me she saw one, when I get home. Yesterday, she saw one, loaded the gun and went looking for it, all on her own, but the squirrel realized what was going on and left. We have peach trees and the squirrels, cleaned off all but one peach last year, so we are determined it's not going to happen again.

I shot the gun before she did, I had trouble getting down low enough to see down the top of the gun. When I finally did, I got busted in the nose, by the back of my hand/thumb. No blood, just a nice pop to the nose, was not expecting it. Definitely made for small people. From the factory, it has a dowel rod stuffed up in the magazine tube, that completely blocks off the magazine tube. I could not figure out why, I could not get any shells in the tube, then decided it had to have some form of a plug in it. So I took the barrel off, and the tried to shove a round in the magazine and sure enough a wooden dowel rod came out the front end of the magazine tube. With that out, the gun will hold a total of four rounds.

Just like Mossberg's adds say, it has a easy reach forearm, basically the plastic forearm is made so it's farther rearward. The distance from the grip to the trigger is noticeably shorter than a common rifle or shotgun, definitely made for people with small hands. Then the stock is short, without the extension, the length of pull is 10.5", with the stock extension, the length of pull is 11.5", the gun fit my wife better with the extension installed. The barrel is only 18.5" long, so it swings easy and feels lighter not having the weight way out there away from the shooter. Then the gun weighs 5 lbs. The gun came with a modified choke installed, we left that one in the barrel. Then it came with a improved cylinder and a full choke, then a choke wrench. The recoil pad does work pretty good. I would bet, if it did not have such a soft recoil pad, it thump pretty good. I would say the recoil is a little on the heavy side, for a kids shotgun, but not bad, but a kid may tell you different.
