I have never built my own arrows but I am ready to take the plunge this year. I have read the "Time for adult arrows" thread and I think I understood what most were saying.
I am a 28" draw length, I just got a Mathews VXR 28" with the 75lb mods. I have it backed off to about 70lbs (estimated) and will probably be staying there.
I have traditionally shot Gold Tip XT Hunter 340's off the shelf and have been fairly pleased but have had mixed results with pass throughs (haven't shot anything with the new Mathews yet). I hunt 90% of the time from an elevated box blind (3') over a corn feeder so most shots are 15-30 yards. 100 grain mechanical broadhead.
I also am planning on a Western hunt of some kind, elk most likely, in the next year or two. I am aware, this may be two different arrow builds.
Given my specs, I think I am right on the bubble of shooting a 340 spine or a 300 spine, looking at Gold Tips comparison chart. I am not married to Gold Tips, I am open to other options, but would prefer to go with a higher quality and smaller diameter arrow than the XT Hunters. I have my eye on the Gold Tip Kinetic Pierce and Gold Tip Black Label Quantum. I think I am shooting for a total arrow weight of 400 grains or somewhere in that ballpark. I know nothing about inserts.
What am I missing or leaving out? Am I on the right track? Advice? Help!
